Chapter 3: Hierarchy
It was a beautiful day outside, the perfect day to test quirks. Mr. Aizawa readied all the equipment and headed to the field with several softballs in his pockets.
After a few minutes, his students came running towards him, their new gym uniforms cleaned and polished. He smiled to himself as he thought about how those same uniforms wouldn't survive the week, if not the first day.
The class lined up side by side, faces filled with a mix of anxiety and excitement.
"Alright problem children, we're going to start our first day with a quirk assessment," the tired looking man said.
The whole class groaned. Even Alexander thought that such a thing was unnecessary. He already knew what he needed to improve and knew that there was more he could unlock from his quirks. He genuinely thought it would've been better to start the training right away.
The white wolf wasn't impatient, it's just that he saw no reason for it since everyone had just taken the entrance test. He felt that it would have been better to do this at a later date so that they could see how much their powers had improved compared to the entrance test.
"That's enough," Mr. Aizawa said, breaking Alexander out of his thought process. "I understand that it's annoying, but I need to see where you are for myself. Now, will the student who got the top score please step forward."
Just as the white furred canine was about to raise his hand, Bakugou began to walk towards Aizawa, a big, cocky grin covering his face.
"Here I am teach!" he said with a smirk. "Obviously, I have the highest score! There's no way that any of these extras-"
"No Bakugou… You didn't get the top score," Aizawa said in a tired voice. "Now, get back in line."
Bakugou's eyes widened. He was about to ask who did better than him, but his question was answered before he could utter a word.
"Hey Fido, fetch," the raven haired teacher called out as he threw the ball to Alexander who caught it instinctively. "Now come up to the-"
Suddenly, a jet of water shot past Aizawa's face at top speed, nearly taking off his ear. Aizawa, fully aware of who was responsible, turned to glare at Alexander, only to be greeted by a terrifying sight.
The white wolf was glaring at his teacher, giving off a sinister aura so strong that his classmates became noticeably uncomfortable, their faces filled with fear. His fur bristled, his tail rose up, his black eyes and gold irises were filled with rage, and he began letting out a loud growl, exposing his fangs.
Aizawa knew these signs well. This was the body language of a wolf that was out for blood. He didn't need an intelligence quirk to know that Alexander was pissed and that he would most likely kill someone if he was pushed any further.
"Mr. Aizawa," Alexander said as calmly as possible, a deep growl still present in his voice. "I realize that I never mentioned it before so just consider that a warning shot. I really, REALLY hate being called a dog or treated like one."
The wolf boy turned his head to his classmates, causing all but Bakugou, Seteth, and Shoto to shudder.
"That goes for the rest of you as well. It's just something that slightly irritates me," he said with a closed eye smile, still emitting a ferocious amount of killing intent. "You see, I am not a dog, I am a wolf. I suggest you remember that."
"That's slightly irritated?" Mineta thought to himself as he started to cry, trying his best not to soil himself.
"So he has a trigger word," Aizawa thought to himself as he narrowed his eyes. "Just what I need."
"Anyways, sorry about what you just saw. It's just something that rubs me the wrong way," Alexander said with a soft smile before turning to his teacher. "So, Mr. Aizawa, what am I doing?"
"Before I tell you, I'd like to know the furthest that you've thrown a ball," the raven haired man responded.
The white wolf tilted his head slightly to think as his ear flicked. "Mmm… I think it was about 40 meters. Though, that was a while ago and I was still learning to control the extra strength my wolf quirk gives me."
"And I'm assuming you've been training since then," Aizawa said in a tired voice.
"Yes sir," Alexander said respectfully. "I've learned to control my strength and have become a lot stronger than I was back then."
Aizawa nodded. "Alright then, how about you demonstrate for us? You're gonna stand in that circle and throw the ball as far as you can using your quirks."
"Quirks? As in both of them sir?" the large carnivore asked.
"Yes, I need to observe your control," Aizawa answered.
Alexander nodded and stepped into the circle. He took a moment to think and had an idea.
The wolf boy opened his canteen and made a pulling motion with his fingers to draw the water out where it hovered over his hand. He then encased the ball in a palm-sized bubble of water before lining himself up.
Without any hesitation, he threw the bubble with enough strength to shatter the sound barrier. Everyone watched in amazement as the ball went flying with enough force to part the clouds it punched through.
Alexander wasn't done yet however. He put his arms forward and closed his hands as he was gripping rope. He waited until the ball hit the peak of its arc. Once it did, the wolf pulled, causing the water to jet out from the bubble. This propelled the ball farther and faster as if it were a bottle rocket until all the water was gone.
"1,012 meters," Aizawa said after looking at the recorder in his hand. "Impressive."
Alexander let out a loud and prideful howl as his classmates cheered him on, the previously tense atmosphere broken by the heroic effort.
"Whoa, 1,012 meters?!" Izuku said with sparkles in his eyes as he started writing in his notebook. "To get a score like that, he would need incredible and precise control of his quirks! I have to know how he did it!"
"I agree, knowing such a control method would benefit us greatly," Ida said as he adjusted his glasses.
"I believe the trick lies with that water bubble he made," Yaoyorozu said as she brought a hand up to her chin.
As everyone continued to discuss the wolf boy's score, Aizawa had him go to the back of the line. From there, he explained that everyone was going to get a chance to throw the ball. When one of the students said that this test was going to be fun, however, Aizawa made a sadistic smile.
"Fun huh?" the raven haired teacher said sinisterly. "If that's what you think, then let's up the stakes. Whoever comes last in the assessment will be expelled on the spot."
The students' eyes widened. There was no way the school would allow that to happen and some of them even said so. They protested that it wasn't fair to get expelled like that, especially after passing the entrance exam.
Aizawa ignored them however and explained that life isn't fair. He also told them that if they're going to complain, then they should just leave now.
With no other options, everyone backed down and got ready.
"Alright, next is Seteth," the older man said.
Seteth caught the ball and walked nonchalantly to the circle. He thought about what he could do before coming up with a good strategy. The black bat took a deep breath before opening his arms to spread his wings.
"Mr. Aizawa," he asked as he turned his head. "We can do whatever we want so long as we don't leave the circle, correct?"
The teacher nodded. "That is correct. So long as you stay in the designated area, you can use whatever ability you wish."
With a nod Seteth dropped the ball before grabbing it with his foot since, like Alexander, he didn't wear shoes either. He then took to the sky, making sure he was directly above the circle. He then kicked the ball as hard as he could before flapping his wings to create a powerful blast of wind that sent the ball out of sight.
"923 meters," Mr. Aizawa said as the bat landed. "Well done."
"That was great!" Alexander barked, his tail wagging happily. "Being able to fly and manipulate the wind is awesome!"
"For sure," Mina cheered. "And did you see how far it went with just one kick? That guy's gotta have some really strong legs!"
"Not to mention how precise he was," Tokoyami said in an interested voice. "For him to land a clean strike using the wind show's just how incredible his control is."
The other students also complimented the bat, telling him that his method was very inventive.
Seteth, secretly proud of the score and praise, simply shrugged his shoulders before stepping back in line, this time, standing next to Alexander.
"Bakugou, you're up," Aizawa said before tossing a ball to the blond boy.
"About time you called me up!" the explosive quirk user said with a smirk. "Time to show these extras how it's done!"
Bakugou went to the circle and readied himself. He then yelled DIE before he sent the ball flying with a powerful explosion from his palm.
"HA! What do you say to that you damn zoo animals!" the arrogant boy mocked as he pointed at Alexander and Seteth.
"735 meters," Aizawa announced.
"WHAT!?" Bakugou shouted.
"That's still pretty good Bakugou. I mean, you're not breaking any records, but it was cool how the ball blasted off like a shuttle rocket!" the white wolf responded with a toothy smile.
"It was alright," Seteth said in a disinterested tone.
The class quietly laughed to themselves. Bakugou kept talking big only to fall short. This of course, agitated the explosion quirk user.
The blond boy clenched his teeth and tightened his fists in frustration. Then, before anyone could act, Bakugou charged at Alexander and Seteth with all the force of a missile.
"Damn you disgusting beasts! BOTH OF YOU JUST DIE!" he roared in anger.
Aizawa threw out his scarf and activated his quirk in order to stop the rampaging student. Before he could however, Alexander rotated his body and slammed his tail on the ground in front of him. A huge geyser erupted from underneath Bakugou, sending him flying straight upward.
Seteth shot up above Bakugou and came down on the blond headed boy with a spiral kick, closing his wings and using his wind ability to spin his body like a drill.
As Bakugou was sent crashing down to the ground, he looked up at the vampire bat with hatred in his eyes. He opened his palms, the explosive force of his quirk increasing at an alarming rate.
"YOU! RAT WITH WINGS, I'LL KILL YOU!" he yelled as he wound up his arm.
"NO YOU DON'T!" Alexander shouted.
The white wolf grabbed Bakugou's wrist with a water whip, pulling the boy towards him so fast that Bakugou couldn't react. Alexander then punched him with enough force to send him flying into the nearby wall.
Aizawa, who was watching the whole thing unfold, moved over to check on Bakugou, making mental notes of how his other two students fought. When the raven haired man arrived, he saw the blond boy was unconscious and stuck in the wall, blood slowly running down his face.
"KACCHAN!" Midoriya yelled in a panic.
"WAY TO GO DUDES!" Kamanari cheered.
"Can't say he wasn't asking for it, ribbit" Asui added.
"That may be so, but I don't believe it was necessary to take it that far," Ida said as he crossed his arms.
"I disagree actually," Yaoyorozu responded. "It was clear that Bakugou had completely given in to his anger. If those two hadn't acted the way they did, odds are they would have been burned beyond recognition. I may even go so far as to say that not even Recovery Girl would have been able to do all that much in that situation."
"Yea, that awesome quirk is what makes Bakubro so incredible," Kirishima laughed.
"And dangerous," Tokoyami said under his breath.
While everyone was talking, Aizawa cleaned up Bakugou's wound before tossing the explosive boy over his shoulder.
"Alright problem children, with Bakugou out cold, we can't accurately measure and compare everyone's skills. That said, I'm gonna continue to test the rest of you as soon as I finish leaving Bakugou with Recovery Girl," the raven haired teacher explained.
Everyone nodded and after a few minutes, Mr. Aizawa returned with some equipment and the test resumed as normal. Uraraka came in first in the ball throwing test. Thanks to her gravity quirk, the ball ended up in space. Alexander and Seteth came in second and third place respectively.
The rest of the tests consisted of various agility, strength, and endurance based tests. Just like with the ball throw, the students were told to use their quirks in creative ways to give themselves better scores than normal.
Alexander came in first with the strength oriented tests like the grip strength, toe touch, and the pushups and pull ups. Seteth meanwhile came in first in the more speed and agility based tests like the 50-meter dash, hurdle run, and standing long jump. This lined up with what their teacher saw during their fight with Bakugou.
From Aizawa's point of view, Alexander was the type of fighter who relied on his natural abilities in combination with his instincts and ability to adapt, all of which have been well honed and trained. Seteth on the other hand was a speedster who preferred to fight at a distance and keep to the high ground. But could use his superior agility to get in close and attack from unexpected angles. All in all, it was clear to the teacher that these two would be a formidable duo if they teamed up.
At the end of the day, everyone's results were announced. Alexander came in first overall with Seteth coming at a close second, only having 5 less points than the wolf. Third was Todoroki with a 10 point difference from Seteth, followed by Yaoyorozu and so on and so forth.
At the end of the announcement everyone looked at Hagakure, or at least at her floating clothes, with concern. Since her quirk was invisibility, something that couldn't augment any of her natural abilities, she ended up in last place. Of course, you didn't need to see her face to know how upset she was or how close she was to crying.
"Don't fret problem children, I'm not expelling anyone today," Aizawa said in a tired voice. "All of this was just a clever ruse to get you to go all out. After all, how could I properly examine your quirks and your control over them if you didn't show me your full strength?"
All the students, except for Alexander, Momo, Seteth, and Shoto, were left completely speechless, their jaws hanging wide open. They watched as their teacher dismissed them for the day and left, still at a loss for words.
"I gotta say, that was a lot of fun," Alexander said aloud to himself, his tail wagging happily. "I can't wait to tell my family about it. Though, I may have to leave out what happened with Bakugou. Hope that doesn't come back to bite me later or cause the teachers to think I'm a delinquent."
"I highly doubt it," Seteth said. "Bakugou attacked us first, something the whole class can attest to. So if anything, he'll be the one in trouble if he tries to make it a big deal."
"Hey! How are you guys so calm right now?" Kaminari asked as he pointed at the two. "Did you know he wasn't serious about expelling us?"
"Well, yes… Was that not obvious?" Momo asked with a raised brow.
"It was to me," the wolf boy answered. "Mr. Aizawa's scent pretty much gave it away. That and the fact that his voice and heart rate changed."
"Oh, you heard that too?" Seteth asked in a slightly surprised tone. "And here I thought I was the only one."
"What can I say, these things on top of my head aren't just for show," Alexander said with a small smirk as he pointed to his big, pointy wolf ears.
"What about you Yaoyorozu?" Asui asked. "How did you know he wasn't serious?"
"Oh, well… a tactic like his is very common. What's more, it would look pretty bad for him to kick out a student on the first day, especially when they got into class 1-A," Momo explained.
"I honestly didn't know he was joking, but it's not like I was gonna fail so I didn't care," Shoto said in a monotonous yet arrogant voice.
At this point, everyone was either facepalming themselves for falling for the trick or glaring at Shoto. Everyone, that is, except for Izuku Midoriya, who was writing in his notebook.
He made notes about what Alexander and Seteth said when they explained how they knew about Aizawa's trick and started coming up with some theories. Since he had a tendency to mutter about his thoughts and do it rather loudly, everyone stared at him with discomfort as he let out the word vomit.
"Um… should we stop him?" Alexander asked as he sweatdropped.
"Somehow I doubt our words would get through to him," Uraraka laughed.
"That's gonna get annoying fast," Seteth said under his breath.
"Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm out," Kirishima said as he waved goodbye before walking away.
"Me too," the white wolf said with a nod. "Gotta pick up my little brother."
"Alright, later Mr. Alpha," Sero teased.
Alexander rolled his eyes before walking away.
"Alpha, huh?" the wolf thought. "Maybe one day."
Everyone said their goodbyes and headed out, except for Izuku who was still muttering to himself.
