Could Have

He could have told Will as they lay in bed. It might have been just before he took the younger man, spoken in a moment of passion. Or it might have been afterwards in the languor of the afterglow as he smoked his pipe. It could also have been in those early hours of dawn as they found each other again, though they were but half-awake. Then, there were the first stirrings of morning, just before the rose for the day. ...Or it could just have been when Will himself whispered the words in his ear.

*

He could have told Will as they watched the sun. It might be rising in the sky with the promise of a new day, all rosy pink and burnt orange with a dash of lavender. It would have been symbolic of a new beginning. But, it could just as well have been the dying of the past as they saw the fire sink into the sea. Rich crimson with dark streaks of yellow and ocher. Then, he could have been the one to whisper it to Will as he held the man from behind, arms holding tight and not wanting to let go.

*

He could have told Will as they walked a beach. It might have been a deserted island, or a secluded strip of sand at some exotic port. Warm sand underneath their toes, cool water rushing past their legs in waves crested with white. The sun could have smiled down at them, or it could have been but a silver crescent of moon. A chase across the sand, a tumble onto the rough grains, a kiss, then a promise of forever.

*

He could have told Will as they spent a night at Tortuga. It might have been at the bar with the young man almost on his lap, and too much to drink. A slip of the tongue at its truest. Or it could have been in their room at the tavern as they made love in the flickering candlelight. He could have told him then. They would have been the words that went with the act, a reassurance that it meant more than one night.

*

He could have told Will as they faced almost unbeatable odds. It might have been Norrington and his ship coming just a little too close. Or the one time a bad stroke of luck got them caught and almost sent to the gallows. It even could have been when the Pearl almost went down with them on it. The fire from the galley area, or the typhoon they met headlong on their way to Singapore. ...Perhaps, even when Will was struck with scurvy and was sick for days. He was a sight then with his bruised skin and bleeding gums. The pirate would have burnt more than one port to the ground for a single piece of lime at that time. He just couldn't get out the words stuck in his throat.

*

He could have told Will as they tried to fish on deck while it rained. The taste of salt on their lips even as fresh water came down in torrents. It might have been as they leaned against the railing with sticks of sturdy wood hanging over the side with lengths of twine and hooks. He could have glanced sidewards at the man who'd never left his side with all they'd been through. He could even have fallen a little more in love with the other as water trailed down his tanned face and kissed that easy smile.

He could have. And he did.

"I love you, Will."
