Alice whips back to me, this time sitting next to me on the couch.
"Alice I-"
"Shh," she whispers, "Reneé is here."
A knock on the door sounds, and I get up to answer it, but Alice beats me to it. She opens the door and Reneé is on the other end of it. So is a man dressed in a sharp, tweed suit, a cross dangling from his neck, and a bible in his hand.
"Bella!" She exclaims, "Oh Bella, you have to come to church with me." She pauses, and turns to Alice. "Oh, Alice, thank you. You're always here for my girl Bella."
Alice smiles warmly, and steps aside from the door to let Reneé in. The man follows.
"Adrian," Reneé says to the man, "this is my daughter Bella, and her... friend, Alice."
Adrian places his hands in mine and smiles icily. I don't like it. His bulbus head turns to Alice and Reneé,
"Might I have some privacy with Isabella?"
"Bella," I correct.
Reneé nods, and Alice skeptically follows her out of the room. I know she'll be listening to every word he says to me, making sure I am ok. I nod at her ok, telling her I want her to listen. I can see a vision pop in her head, just based on how her facial expression changes. She shakes out of it, and continues to walk out of the room.
When they're in the separate room, Adrian puts a fat hand on my shoulder.
"Bella, your mother is worried about you, and she asked me to talk to you about something."
I raise my eyebrows and skeptically listen, this guy is full of shit.
"Your mother thought that you might like come to church and pray with her."
"Look... Adrian, whatever your name is," I say, "I'm really not interested in converting, but thanks for the offer I guess."
"Bella," he says, "there's always time to find god, and with your father-"
"No," I say, cutting him off, "I can't do this, I'm not doing this."
I walk to the front door and go to turn the handle when he grabs my arm, pulling me away from the door. His grip is strong, and he is hurting my arm.
"Bella stop! You're not going anywhere."
"Let go of me!" I shriek.
Alice is in the room now, and grabs his arm, ripping it off of me.
I run to the front door and open it, practically running down the stairs, Alice following me. She slams the door and I run out the entrance of the building.
"Fuck!" I say, "Alice, I have nowhere to go, where am I gonna go?"
She shakes her head, "Bella, you really don't think that I haven't seen all of this? I came prepared, I have an apartment we can go to."
We get into her small red sedan, and zoom off into the city. There's barely any traffic on the road, and right now it feels like we're the only two people in the world. We drive for about 10 minutes, and when we reach our destination, the silence breaks.
"We're here," she says.
We get out of the car, and the building looks more like a hotel than an apartment complex. We walk up the stairs, and Alice unlocks the door to the apartment. We walk in, and she closes the door behind her. The kitchen is luxurious, and the lounge is furnished with a fancy couch.
Alice is inches from my face again and she whispers, "Do you like it?"
I nod, "Mmh hmm, it's nice."
"Do you want a tour?"
I nod again. I follow her to the bathroom. The tiles are square and white, lined perfectly to the wall. The mirror is oval, the lighting soft and warm, hitting Alice's face at just the right angle. Her skin is impossibly perfect, her golden eyes boring into mine. My face flushes and we continue out of the room.
"That's about it for the bathroom," she jokes, "I'll show you the bedroom now."
We walk in, and it's an entirely different vibe, with the gray painted walls contrasting off of the bed. The white sheets littered with red rose petals, and the lights turned way down low. Alice once again looks impossibly perfect, but in an entirely different way.
"Um, Alice?"
"Yeah?"
"When you said bedroom, did you mean that there was only one?"
She nods, and moves towards me, her eyes golden and bright, her mouth curled into a smile.
"Is there a problem with that Bella?"
"N-No," I say, "no problem at all."
"Are you sure? You look awfully embarrassed."
I shake my head, "Nope, no problem Alice," I say as my face flushes red. My eyes fall onto her lips, smooth and pinkish. I want to kiss her so badly.
"I'm going to the bathroom," I blurt out, leaving the room, and Alice, behind.
I go into the bathroom and shut the door, activating the lock. Seeing myself in the mirror is unpleasant, everything I think shows on my face. And right now I'm thinking about Alice. My palms are sweaty, and I lift one up to run through my hair.
A pound at the door startles me,
"Bella?" Alice calls, "I know you're not peeing, I would hear you."
"What?" I respond, "You can hear me pee?"
The door opens with a thud, and Alice walks in. She scoffs, "Bella, I can practically hear the blood rush to your face every time you look at me."
She lifts her hand up, "Like right now."
"Wait what?" I say.
"Bella, please don't tell me you were looking at yourself in the mirror?"
"Uhh, I- No…" I trail off.
"Bella, I know you'd much rather look at me."
"Maybe," I mumble.
She wanders over to me, "You look so sexy in that dress Bella, but it would look better off."
"Okay," I say, "and on that note, I'm gonna take a shower, so you need to leave."
"What?" She says, "Me? Leave? Bella you're crazy,"
"Mmh hmm, and you're Alice, please leave."
"Bella, you don't really want that, I can help you wash your back."
"Yeah well, I've managed to do so for 20 years just fine, I think I'll be okay."
I usher Alice out and close the door.
"Also, how did you even get in? I had the door locked,"
She just scoffs, "Please Bella, you think some lousy little lock is going to keep me out? Think again."
I turn the shower taps on and undress. Getting into the shower I can almost feel Alice listen to me. I try to ignore it and focus on washing my hair instead, but it's no use. I can't get her off of my mind. What am I going to do about her?
