At almost the exact instant as Lily and James entered the Evans' house, they winced. Evidently, while the couple were speaking with Dumbledore, Lily's sister, Petunia, had decided to visit the elder Evans', bringing her husband and son with her. And, it seemed as though Petunia's husband, Vernon, and her son, Dudley, were of the same sort as she was; spoiled and thinking that anyone different from them was abnormal and freaky. Mrs. Evans ran over to Lily as soon as she saw her in the doorway, looking frazzled.
"Hello, dear, I'm so sorry about Petunia, I really didn't know that she would come today, you know; we had a talk, and I do think you were right, it doesn't seem like she likes you very much anymore; but she wanted to hold little Lia-"
"Tuney's got Rosie?!" Lily yelped.
Mrs. Evans nodded. Lily's eyes widened and she glanced quickly between the sitting room and the kitchen.
"Petunia's in the parlor-"
Lily ran off in the direction of the parlor, desperate to make sure Rosie was all right.
"-darling," Mrs. Evans finished.
"Hey, Azzie," James greeted Mrs. Evans, "Is Rob anywhere?"
Mrs. Evans smiled, "Yes, Rob is in the parlor with Petunia."
"Great! Thanks," James said before he ran off to join his wife and in-laws.
Mrs. Evans smiled after him, having informally adopted him as in-laws should. Just then, she heard someone clearing their throat behind her. She turned around, meeting the gaze of her other son-in-law, Vernon, who was holding his son.
"Azalea," he started, sounding a bit pompous, "Would you hold Dudley? I need to go make sure that those...people haven't done anything to my Pet. She has told me all about them. I'm quite sorry that you had to deal with...the girl for so long."
With that, he shoved the baby into her hands and lumbered off to the parlor, having long since passed being overweight. She looked down at the boy in her arms and noted that he seemed to have gained a lot of weight since she last saw him. Vernon had no doubt passed down his lifestyle to Dudley. At the moment, he wasn't crying and seemed to be asleep, but Mrs. Evans knew that it wouldn't last long. Petunia had confided in her that 'her Duddikins' was a light sleeper, and would wake up for anything.
Meanwhile, in the parlor, Mr. Evans was monitoring the two sisters. Ever since Lily had been accepted to Hogwarts and Petunia hadn't, there had been a rift between the two that seemed unfixable. Even now, they constantly seemed to be fighting over who was better; who was more loved. It had just seemed to get worse over time, especially after their marriages and the births of their children. To Petunia, this was Lily's way of showing that she was better than Petunia. Lily had a more popular husband, a fancier wedding, an easier time conceiving, an easier pregnancy, a shorter labor, a daughter that Petunia so desperately wanted.
Lily, however, just wanted her sister back. She didn't understand why Petunia was so mean to her, especially after Lily had tried to include Petunia so much. She had invited her to her wedding, asked her to be Rosie's godmother, offered to take her to Diagon Alley, and had even talked to Dumbledore on her behalf, not that it had done much good.
Lily had barged into the room, looking very anxious, but she needn't have. Petunia was simply holding Rosie, with Mr. Evans standing guard. In fact, Lily thought Petunia looked a little sad as she stared down at Lily's daughter. This didn't last long, however, as when Petunia heard Lily rush into the room, she looked up with a sour look on her face.
"You just had to come today, didn't you?" she said scornfully, "You knew I would visit. Why couldn't you just let me have a nice visit with my mum and dad for once?"
Lily stopped short, "What are you talking about, Tuney?"
Petunia scowled, "You know exactly what I'm talking about. You always ruin my visits with my parents. Why shouldn't tonight be any different?"
"Tuney, I would never do that! James and I had a meeting tonight, and Mum and Dad wanted to watch Rosie! I had no idea you would be visiting!"
"Of course you would say that. Nothing is ever your fault, is it?"
Lily looked taken aback. Of all the things she had thought Petunia would say, that was not one of them.
"Whatever," Petunia scoffed, standing up from her chair. "Here's your daughter back, Lily."
Lily furrowed her eyebrows at this, but took her daughter back from Petunia. Petunia was just turning back around to say something to their father when James entered the room. He made a beeline for Lily and Rosie once he saw them, completely ignoring Petunia, but giving a wave to Mr. Evans.
Petunia made a face, "What are you doing here?"
"Well, my wife and daughter are here, in case you hadn't noticed," James said scornfully.
Lily gave him a Look. He immediately gave her a guilty smile and patted Rosie on the head, being careful not to wake her up.
"As I was going to say, Dad, before he walked in," Petunia said quickly, "It was great seeing you, even though that...thing was here."
"It was wonderful seeing you again too, Pumpkin," Mr. Evans smiled at his elder daughter.
Just then, Vernon lumbered into the room, shooting a nasty look in the direction of Lily, James, and Rosie.
"Have they done anything to you, Pet?" he asked, ignoring his father-in-law completely.
"No, Vernon, they haven't. I was just telling Dad how great it was to see him and Mum."
"Oh yes, of course," Vernon acknowledged.
Just as he was about to say something else, a loud cry came from the entryway.
"My Duddykins!" Petunia yelped, and ran off towards her son, Vernon following close behind.
"Hey, Rob, how's it going?" James asked, walking over to Mr. Evans.
"Just fine, thank you, James," Mr. Evans replied, "I'm very glad you let Lia stay here for the evening; she was such a joy."
"I'm sure she was, Daddy." Lily smiled, rocking the baby in her arms a bit.
Mr. Evans and James walked back over to Lily, Mr. Evans placing a kiss on the top of his daughter's head.
"I'm sorry about Petunia, Princess. And Vernon, too."
"It's okay, Daddy. I don't mind. They'll come around eventually. I think we'd better go home too; it's almost Rosie's bedtime."
"Okay, Princess. Just make sure to come again soon. And bring my little Muffin with you; she's too cute for her own good."
Lily smiled widely, she just loved her father's pet names.
"Bye, Daddy!" she waved.
"Bye, you three!" He waved back and smiled.
James gave Mr. Evans a salute and scampered off to join his girls.
