Chapter 12:
Chaotic Teamwork, Part Two -
Dance-Off in the Dunes
[Party Selected: Sonic, Tails, Amy, Mighty, Ray]
[Current World: Mobius]
[Current Location: Skies Around Angel Island]
[BGM: Tee Lopes - Sonic Returns BGM]
The skies of Mobius were as tranquil as they usually were. The bad doctor that usually tormented the planet wasn't currently planning anything, allowing the floating landmass that stayed hidden to society to continue its natural trajectory. The landmass's lone major inhabitant was enjoying the peacefulness that his home provided, relaxing on the beach after a workout, like what his usual plans were. Calm and comfortable. That's how it usually is on Angel Island.
Of course, the echidna's peace would not last much longer.
A red biplane shot through the clouds, en route for the landmass. "We should be there within a minute," said Tails, making sure the Tornado kept its steady course.
"Roger that, keed," said Sonic, saluting. Accompanying him on the Tornado's top wing was Amy Rose, Mighty the Armadillo, and Ray the Flying Squirrel, all who had received a mysterious, unsigned letter instructing them to go to Angel Island.
Amy gripped her Piko Piko Hammer as Angel Island came into view. "I hope I'm wrong and this isn't one of Eggman's traps," she said. "Knuckles isn't the kind of guy to invite us to his home."
Mighty shook his head. "Nah, subtlety isn't Eggman's forte," he argued. "If it was him, we'd know by now, and it probably wouldn't be on Angel Island."
"Yeah! If anything it would be a giant interplanetary amusement park in outer space or something," Ray chimed in. "Maybe even claim he's turning over a new leaf in the flyers!"
"Weird, that sounds strangely familiar…" Sonic pondered. But his pondering was cut short by the Tornado touching ground on the beach. The four passengers hopped off, Tails left the cockpit, and Sonic turned to greet the rather frustrated-looking echidna who witnessed their arrival. "Hiya, Knuckles! How's your day been?" the hedgehog asked his friendly rival.
"Well, it was going rather peacefully until you showed up," said Knuckles, his arms crossed. "But now that you're here, I may as well ask why."
Tails took out the strange piece of paper that had shown up in his and the others' mailboxes that morning. "A strange beneficiary told us to come here this morning," the fox explained. "We're not certain it's Eggman, but we're still staying on guard."
[BGM: End]
"If that's the case, then we should probably do a perimeter search of the island for any robots," Knuckles suggested. But before the group could set out on their recon mission, a mysterious ball of energy appeared in midair. "Wait a second…" said Knuckles, sensing a strange familiarity in the energy. "Does that mean what I think it means?"
Sonic smirked, watching in anticipation. "I sure hope so," he said. Slowly but surely, the ball increased in size until it became a complete vortex. Out from the vortex stepped several beings with cuboid bodies. Half of them were the avatars of real-worlders playing a video game, and the other half was a family of mobian dogs and a few of their friends. Sonic recognized them instantly. "Blocky dudes! Long time no see!" the hedgehog said, walking up to greet his allies. "Danny, Liam, and Kevin, was it?"
"That's right! Good to see you again, Sonic," said Liam, nodding. He looked over at the dogs. "We brought some guests, as you can see."
"Oh, hey, Bluey and Bingo!" said Tails, greeting the two cattle dogs. He then noticed the dalmatian, afghan hound, and maltese with them. "These are your friends, right?"
"Yeah! Chloe, Indy, and Lila," said Bluey. "They're gonna come with us!"
"Really?" said Tails, a little unsure. "Well, as long as they think they can handle it…" The fox then looked up at the strange blue fairy-like creature hovering nearby. "Huh. Now that's a new face."
"Oh, yes!" said the creature. "My name is Balancia, and I have summoned you all here today for a very important reason…does the name 'the Manipulator' ring a bell to any of you?"
Sonic and Tails looked at each other, recalling the crazed interdimensional maniac they had faced in another dimension some time ago. "Oh, we totally do," said Sonic, not having fond memories of the foe. "Lemme guess, he's moving on to other worlds?"
"Worse. He's planning on conquering the entire multiverse," explained Balancia. "And we'll need your help in order to fill the Key of Balance."
"Key of Balance?" asked Bingo. "What's that?"
"Oh, this thing!" said Liam, taking out the key he had on hand. It was clear with a line in the middle dividing the two halves. "We'll have to fill one half by doing good deeds, but for the other half…" He trailed off, realizing what that potentially meant.
"I know what you're thinking," said Balancia. "But don't worry. The keys can still harness energy from a pre-existing source, so we won't have to commit bad deeds. Finding that pre-existing source, however, will be difficult."
Knuckles made a proposition. "I don't really know anything about this key or where we can give it power, but I know a way we can find out…"
[Location Change: Hidden Palace Zone]
[BGM: Tee Lopes - Sonic 3&K Intro]
And that was how the group ended up in the Hidden Palace Zone, in front of the altar of the Master Emerald. Holding the Key of Balance in his hands, Knuckles stood in front of the jewel he was entrusted with protecting. "O Master Emerald, we seek your guidance," the echidna said. "Show us where we can give this key its power."
The Master Emerald began to glow and blink with power. Everyone watched as a vision appeared above it, showing the location of a small, wooden building in a desert. "A pub?" asked Bandit. "What will we need to go to a pub for?"
"To fill one half of the key, I guess," said Danny. "Maybe we'll need to be waiters or something."
The vision changed to the view of a strange beacon in a cave. "Hey, I think I know where that is," said Mighty. "But to get there, we'll have to go through the Jungle Zone."
"The Jungle Zone, huh?" said Sonic. "That was a fun time! Count me in!"
Suddenly, the vision changed once more. Now, figures of Bluey, Bingo, and their friends appeared above the emerald. "Hey…that looks like us," said Bluey, confused. In the vision, arrows surrounded by hearts coming from Chloe, Indy, and Lila moved towards Bluey and Bingo, and in return, arrows surrounded by sparkles moved towards their friends. After that, the vision ended.
"What did that last part mean?" asked Bingo, shrugging.
"I think the Master Emerald said that if Bluey and Bingo are around people they love," explained Balancia, "it'll increase their power." The kids all "Ooooo'd" in response.'
"Well, if we're gonna go to two different places, I say we split up," said Liam. He took the Key of Balance back from Knuckles. "Let's see, can we…" He tried to pull the key apart, and sure enough, it split in half. "Alright! Danny, you handle the dark energy, Kevin and I will take the light energy."
"Roger!" said Danny, nodding. "But how are we gonna get to those places?"
"No worry!" said Tails, typing at his Miles Electric. "Just a few more coordinates…there!" He took out four rings from the Electric and tossed two of them in the air. One turned into a portal to the Jungle Zone, while the other turned into a portal to the Mirage Saloon Zone. "We'll just use these to get where we're going, and these babies…" He held up two more rings. "...will be used to rendezvous in our meet-up spot."
"Sounds like a plan, Stan!" said Sonic. "So, who's going with who?" And so, the party split into two, took the rings that would get them to the rendezvous point, bid each other one last goodbye and "No player left behind", and stepped into the portals to their destinations.
[Character Selected: Kevin]
[Current World: Mobius]
[Current Location: Mirage Saloon Zone, Tranquil Gulch]
[BGM: Tee Lopes - Wildstyle Pistolero - Mirage Saloon Zone Act 1 - Knuckles Mix]
You step through the ring portal with your party into the harsh desert. The heat hits you like a zombie's fist. "Whew! That is hot!" you say, blocking the sun with your eyes.
"You're telling me, mate!" says Bandit. "This makes home look like Canada!"
"It's so hot, I'm melting!" Lila complains. She collapses on the ground holding her hand out as if she was melting like a puddle.
"I was concerned about this," says Tails, shaking his head. "Kids like her aren't used to going on such adventures that we go on."
"Well, as long as she's here, we may as well help her go along," says Liam. He picks up the maltese and starts giving her a piggyback ride. "I hope this bar isn't too far from here…"
Knuckles looks around, scouting the area. "Yeah, I don't really recognize this area of the zone," he admits.
"Relax, this isn't the first time I've been to Tranquil Gulch," says Ray, pointing his thumb to himself. "Just stay by me and you'll be fine!" And so, the flying squirrel is your guide through the desert town, searching for the tavern where the Key of Balance half will be filled.
After about five minutes, Spawny finally catches notice of the building. "(Hey, guys! I think that's the place!)" he says, eagerly pointing towards your destination.
"Right, there we go!" says Bandit. "Ready, Bingo?" The red heeler nods, and you all walk into the tavern.
As soon as the doors open, all eyes fall on you. Human cowboys, an anthropomorphic squirrel in mayor's garb, other anthropomorphic animals, and the possum waitress all stare at you. "Uh…hi, folks," you say, awkwardly waving.
"Don't worry, everyone, they're with me!" says Ray, putting his hands up. "I won a baking contest over here a couple of years ago, they know me." Sure enough, everyone calms down and turns away. "Hey, how about I get you guys some root beer floats? It's pretty hot out there…"
"She certainly looks like she needs it," says Liam, referring to Lila, still on his back.
"Here, come down, Lila," says Bingo, helping the maltese down. "We can share a cup like those teenagers do on TV."
"Thanks, Bingo," replies Lila, taking her hand. You all make your way to the table and sit down.
"We'll all have a root beer float, please," says Ray, paying the waitress. "But can the two little dogs over there split one?"
"No float for me, thanks," says Knuckles, putting his hand up. "I'll just have a bowl of grapes."
The floats quickly come out, and as you enjoy the drinks, you scout the area for any ways you can help. "Hmm…" you wonder, slurping your float. "Doesn't look like there's any opportunities for us to help."
"Yeah, I expected at least some kind of ruckus in a place like this," says Liam. "At least an arm-wrestling war." He decides to take out the key half to inspect it, noticing it had partially filled up with white. "Well, at least Ray handling our floats seemed to have filled this up."
"Oh, yeah! Thank you for that!" says Lila. She and Bingo hold hands, drinking from their float. Suddenly, they both glow with blue energy. "Huh?"
"Whoa. I think that whole power-benefit thing the Master Emerald showed us is happening," says Ray, looking away from his float. You all watch as the blue energy converts itself into the image of a clear feather that floats down into Lila's hands. Sensing some familiarity in it, Bingo picks it up.
"Uh…Bingo, you might want to put that…" begins Bandit, but he is cut off by Bingo shouting "Heavy!", causing his glass to become so heavy it sticks to the table.
"Incredible!" says Tails. "The positive energy created some kind of weapon for Bingo and Lila to use! If the other Chaos Princesses are affected the same way…" He trails off, lost in thought.
"Yeah, hold that thought, Tails," says Knuckles, standing up from his seat. "We've got company!"
[BGM: End]
You and Liam turn towards the door and realize who the unusual visitors are. Black, player-like figures with purple eyes. "Rogue gangermen…" you both hiss. "Okay, everyone, calm down, we'll deal with these guys," says Liam as everyone gets into a defensive position.
"Uh…Bingo…who are they?" asks Lila, terrified.
"Don't worry, Lila. I'll protect you…" Bingo assures her companion. She stands by Bandit and balls her fists, roaring at the intruders.
Bandit frantically looks in his hammerspace area. "Aw, biscuits, I forgot the Hypercube," he groaned. "Looks like I'm using my fists!"
[BGM: Tee Lopes - Danger on the Dance Floor - Mid-boss]
You and the gangermen stare each other down like in a traditional Western stand-off. "Let's dance, you Egg's Benedict Arnolds," you say. Then, when one of them roars, both sides charge. Inhaling the rest of your drink, you spit it out as a star at the frontmost gangerman, who takes the hit before retaliating with a drop kick. Knuckles grabs Tails and tosses him into another gangermen. The fox curls into a Spin Attack to deal damage, followed up by Knuckles gliding fist-first into the fray. Spawny and Liam team up with the Heelers, combining energy blasts, arrows, and old-fashioned fisticuffs. However, the gangermen are able to easily retaliate by sending them back.
You grab the gangerman you're facing and toss it Bingo's way, and she defeats it with a supercharged kick. "Whew! This is exhausting!" you say, wiping your forehead. "We're gonna have to find a new battle strategy!"
"We better weaken these guys first," says Ray, using his tail as a weapon. "Any ideas?"
Bandit pins himself against the wall to defend himself more easily so he can think. He scans the room, looking for something that could weaken the gangermen. That's when it hits him - Lila sitting on her own, watching in fear. "Hey, Bingo!" he calls, and his daughter turns to him. "Go get Lila!"
"Yes, Dad!" says Bingo, giving a salute. She dodges the gangermen and runs to the maltese, and you and Liam make sure that the gangermen can't get to them.
"Lila! Use the featherwand!" shouts Bingo. "Just point at them and yell, 'heavy!'"
"Uh…okay…" says Lila, unsure. She aims at the gangermen, closes her eyes, and says "Heavy?" Suddenly, some of the gangermen's limbs, like their hands, feet, and even some of their rear ends, become extremely heavy, pinning them to the ground.
"Yes, that's what I'm talking about!" cries Liam, pumping his fist. "Alright, let's all heal up before we plan our next course." He takes out a few splash potions of healing you brewed beforehand and tosses them all around, healing you and your teammates.
"The enemies might be handicapped now," says Knuckles, "but they can still use their suction powers." As if to prove his point, he quickly punches a piece of the wall being inhaled in his direction.
"Maybe if we can stun them…" suggests Bandit. "Hey, wait a minute!" He turns your way. "Mate, didn't you have some kind of…pushing thing that stuns them."
You slap your forehead. "Of course! The Mega-Piston! It always comes in handy in a pinch!" You take out the newest incarnation of your creation and raise it up in the air to place it down…
[BGM: End]
[Character Selected: Liam]
[Current World: Mobius]
[Current Location: Tranquil Gulch, Tavern]
It was all going according to plan. Kevin would place down the Mega-Piston, they'd use its awesome power to defeat the gangermen, and rendezvous with the others. Then, disaster. A new vortex suddenly sucked the Mega-Piston out of Kevin's hands. "Aw…crap…" said Liam, shaking his head. "What now?"
That "what now" happened to be a gangerman wearing a purple bow tie. "Hello, Liam and Kevin," said Per, enjoying the look of shock on everyone's faces. "Did you miss me?"
"Hardly," said Kevin. "You almost left us to drown in that tunnel!"
"Hmm…I suppose I did," said Per, making a mock thinking face. "Oh, and here's a tip - don't leave your Key of Balance halves where I can take them!" And that's when Liam realized - he left his key half sitting on the table. And Per took it.
"Put that down, you meanie…" grits Bingo. "Or else!"
"Or else what?"
Bingo and Lila nodded. "HEAVY!" And yet, as soon as Lila said that, the key half did not become comically heavy. "I said, heavy!" Lila tried again.
"Are you done with your games, hm?" asked Per. "I thought so. Now, if you'll excuse me, I-OW!" A glass was suddenly thrown in his face.
"Leave those younglings alone," said Knuckles, having thrown the beer glass that had become heavy.
"Ooo…" said Lila, getting an idea. "Everyone! Start throwing things!"
"Don't have to tell me twice!" said Liam. He, the other heroes, and even the patrons just sitting and watching began to throw everything from hats, darts, blocks of cobblestone, leftover food, even the still-handicapped gangermen. And Lila was able to make just about all of them heavy, and thus harder-hitting.
For a while, it seemed like Per was overwhelmed. Victory seemed to be within the heroes' grasps. Then, suddenly… "Enough!" Per stood up and inhaled all of the projectiles that had been thrown at him.
"No! We were doing so well!" cried Ray. "Well, I guess this is the end, guys…" The heroes watched in horror as Per prepared to spit the projectiles back at everyone. Then, a purple tractor beam appeared, passing through the ceiling. A key emerged from the gangerman's body and was sucked up by the beam, and Liam and Kevin knew it wasn't the key that they lost - it was the key made using the artificial Gadget of Order.
And then everyone made the connection that it was that key that caused Per to withstand all of their hits. So Knuckles, taking the opportunity, ran up to the alien enderman and punched him right in the face. The Mega-Piston flew through the air, heading towards the heroes. "(I got it!)" cried Spawny, holding his arms in the air.
"No…" cried Per through puffed cheeks. "No!"
"Oh, shut your mouth!" cried Liam. He tossed a block of cobblestone into Per's mouth, preventing him from inhaling the device once more. The Mega-Piston landed in Spawny's hands, and the rabborg wasted no time in placing it down. The piston grew to colossal size, its head automatically pushing in the face of Per. In the process, a dimensional rift opened up, beginning to suck in the heroes and gangermen.
"Wahhh!" cried Lila, fearing for her life. "What's happening now?"
Bingo took her companion's hand. "Don't worry, Lila! It's alright! It's gonna help us!"
"Is it really?"
"Why else would we want to place it down?" said Tails. "Though I'm not sure how it's going to work in this case…" Before long, the dimensional rift had sucked all of its targets up, before closing on the bewildered patrons.
[World Change: Trio Attack Realm]
[Location Change: Trio Dance Chamber]
The heroes found their new sights in a chamber that resembled a traditional discotheque - a DJ deck, a disco ball, and a dance floor with alternating colors. The only other patrons in the area were the paperfied gangermen, unable to move. "Woah! Are we gonna fight them by dancing?" asked Tails.
"Looks like it!" said Liam. That's when an idea came to him. "Say, weren't we working on that dance routine?"
"You've got a keen eye," said Kevin, pointing to his friend. He pushed a button on the wall, turning on the music and disco ball. The note block beats of "Revenge" played from the speakers. "Alright, everyone, just follow our leads, and you'll be fine!" Kevin announced.
[BGM: Captainsparklez, Tryhardninja - Revenge]
"Hmm, so this is what music is in their world," Knuckles wondered aloud. He rocked his head to the beat. "Kinda catchy…" Just as the beat dropped, he hit the dance floor, punching the gangermen in time to the music.
Meanwhile, Liam and Kevin began their routine. They started with a sneak-dance, crouching in front of the gangermen to attack, before swinging around their arms in time to the "side to side" lyrics. "Whoo! This works for a talent show, and a battle!" cried Liam, letting himself get lost in the music.
"Tell me about it!" cried Ray, beginning a synchronized break-dance with Tails. Their feet and tails swinging around smacked the gangermen in their faces, the pain waiting to arrive until they returned to the real world.
Seeing everyone have a good time dancing, Bingo decided to join in. "Shall we dance?" she asked, holding out her hand to Lila. The maltese blushed and took it, and the two started to dance together, twirling each other around like a traditional lovely couple.
"(Yeah! Go Bluey's dad!)" cried Spawny, watching Bandit break out his arguably outdated dance moves. The lawn-sprinkler was good enough to smack the gangermen in their faces, but when he started doing the worm, that was what drew everyone over.
"Ha-hey! Check him out!" said Liam, not missing a beat in his routine. "Bluey's dad has got some moves!"
"Rumor has it I took interpretive dance in uni," said the grown Heeler, swinging around Per like a pole. "I'll leave that to viewer interpretation."
"Okay, everyone…big finish!" cried Kevin. As the last note came in, everyone hopped in the middle and struck a final pose, sending damage all around to the gangermen.
"Yeah! Nice job, everyone!" said Liam, genuinely impressed by their moves. "Bluey's dad, sweet 80s moves! Bingo and Lila, good couple's dance! Ray and Tails, awesome synchronization! And Spawny, we'll talk about you dabbing later."
"(Oh…sorry, hehe,)" Spawny awkwardly apologized for his use of definitely outdated moves. With that, the entire chamber faded to white, the attack now over.
[World Change: Mobius]
[Location Change: Tranquil Gulch, Tavern]
[BGM: Peter Hont - What You Came For]
As soon as the sight of the tavern returned to everyone's view, most of the gangermen dropped dead, leaving behind only ender pearls. The one exception was Per, who was merely knocked out. Luckily, it did not matter by that point, because standing there was another gangermen that the group recognized.
"Andy?" said Liam. "What are you doing here?"
"Just making sure this traitor gets what's coming!" the scarfed gangermen replied. "I already got his fancy key, and I believe this key belongs to you!" He tossed the Key of Balance half over to Kevin. Thanks to fighting the gangermen, it was now completely filled up with pure energy.
"So you were the one who did that tractor beam!" said Kevin. "Well, thanks for that. You really saved our butts."
"No problemo," said Andy, waving his hand. "I'm gonna go rendezvous with Mark now, you guys go ahead with your rendezvous."
"Oh, right!" said Tails, snapping his fingers. "We better get out of here, guys!" He looked around, seeing the patrons, even more bewildered than before. "And not just because these folks have seen enough…"
The group walked out of the tavern, cheering about their victory. "Whoo! A traditional Western standoff!" cried Ray, doing somersaults in the air. "Well, maybe not a traditional one, but still! I can't wait to tell Mighty!"
Knuckles gave a reluctant smile. "I hate to admit it, but…I enjoyed myself."
"Yeah, me too," said Lila, shyly. "But it was still scary. Thanks for protecting me, Bingo."
"No worries," said the red heeler, and she gave Lila a small kiss on the cheek.
"Oh! We should probably let Danny know we're coming," Liam suddenly remembered. He grabbed his phone in the real world and dialed Danny's number. "Hey, Dan! We got the key filled up and are gonna head to whatever rendezvous point Tails picked!" He said. But then, his friend said something concerning over the phone. "What? Whaddya mean you lost your half?"
To be continued...and next time: how did Danny lose his half?
Next chapter: While Liam and Kevin dance it up in the desert, Danny finds himself with a dose of "Camaraderie in the Canopy". Even if they aren't the ones he's used to, adventuring with some pals is always good fun - especially with the strange new power Bluey faces around her friends! Of course, every good adventure needs a bit of danger...
Postface: Chapter complete! I know, I know, there wasn't a whole lot of actual dancing in this chapter. That's what I get for naming things in advance!
Trivia time! Here we are in the main setting of this arc - the Sonic world! As I said in the previous chapter, this arc is a revised version of a side-story idea I had, and this adventure in the desert is what came of Tails' side of things. I initially was considering having the party adventure through the Hill Top Zone from Sonic 2 before settling on the Mirage Saloon Zone from Sonic Mania. Just like in my one-shot Mighty and Ray's Western Adventure, I decided to place Tranquil Gulch from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog episode Magnificent Sonic in the zone, since the Western vibe felt fitting. We also found out why Bluey and Bingo's friends are joining in on this adventure - their love for one another can create magical versions of various objects used in the games on Bluey! Here, because of Bingo and Lila's bond, they were able to create the featherwand from the episode of the same name. As for the ending dance battle with the gangermen, that was loosely based off of the pivonka scene from the Sonic 2 movie, and initially planned to take up more of the chapter, hence the name "Dance-Off in the Dunes". I was even originally going to have the gangermen start fighting back with dance, forcing the heroes to use Tails' holographic cloning device. But then I decided to regulate it to a Mega-Piston bit, since I hadn't used the Mega-Piston in a while and it seemed to be a bit more fitting anyway.
That should be it! Please read, review, and share around, and I'll see you all next time for what happened with Danny. Stay diamond, everyone!
