Lupus: Don't I already have one? Though I admit Jason is more a Superman than a Jedi.
And now story time.
Night had started to set in as an ostrich horse galloped through the black mountain range in the Fire Nation. The air was cold as Genji was steering the ostrich horse through the narrow path with Asami's arms wrapped around his waist as she sat behind him
Genji explained that the only way to their destination was through a small hidden path, too difficult to navigate with a car or motorcycle. So the only options they had was ostrich horse or on foot, and seeing as time was of the essence, the decision fell on the animal.
"How far now?" Asami said just as Genji steered the ostrich horse into a opening in the mountain wall, something that had alluded Asami.
"Not far." Genji said, his voice echoing against the wall as they rode through the dark cavern, "Just a little further."
"How can you see?" she said.
"Wasn't it covered that I can see in the dark?" Genji said a bit puzzled, "Oh, well."
As he had said, it wasn't long before they emerged out of the dark cavern and back into the light. Asami took a gasp as she took in the breathtaking view, in the distance a temple was located, designed to look like it was coming out of its natural surroundings like a stone dragon.
"Welcome." Genji said with a smile, "To Ryu Basho."
Riding the Ostrich horse across the stone bridge leading to the temple. Nobody was around to greet them, but Asami spotted several training area's, she even recognized a more brutal training course that Genji had built for Korra's training back at the South Pole.
Stepping off the Ostrich horse, he patted it on the side before tying the reigns down before helping Asami down.
"Where is everyone?" Asami said as she looked around the courtyard.
"Where do you think?" Genji said with a grin as he took a hold of her hand before leading the way.
Walking through the courtyard and into the grand entrance hall, which was big enough to house Genji's penthouse, made out of similar black stone like the mountain where the temple was build into. Lit torches provided light as Asami followed after him to a door to the side.
The sound of loud rowdy chatter, the sound of eating, of glasses being placed down and laughter could be heard, and only became stronger as they walked closer to the hall.
A large fireplace was resting at the end of the hallway, close to it was three large wooden tables, set in a U formation, decorated with plates and goblets along with all sort of meat dishes. Sitting at them where around twenty men and women, each looking distinct enough from each other but most if not all shared one distinct feature among them.
Each of them had amber colored eyes with slid, serpentine pupils.
"...Do you want to know the worst part?" one of the tall females said as she stood on her seat, her black tank top showing off her strong arms, "They where roommates! So the lady offered me a lot to keep quiet. Easiest money I made all year."
The crowd roared with laughter as she moved to drink from her goblet until Genji made his presence known, "Why am I not surprised at Akali for taking the easy way out."
A profound silence fell over the room as every set of eyes looked in the direction of Genji and Asami, but all the attention was focused on him. Getting down from her seat and placing her goblet down on the table, Akali started to walk towards him.
"You got a lot of nerve showing your face around here." Akali said and once she was close enough she threw the first punch, aimed at Genji's face.
But he blocked and countered with a punch of his own, but Akali nimbly evades it. She preformed a quick punch combo to Genji's chest, taking him off guard before he evaded under a strike, preforming a quick punch to his side and sending Akali to the ground with a kick.
Regaining her footing in a leg swipe, Genji evades under her next strike and but he left himself open for a leg sweep, making him fall to the ground but not before he grabbed the front of her shirt and pulled her with him.
With the momentum, Genji body slammed her to the ground before finally pinning her down in a chokehold. Akali attempts to recover, struggling to break free but when she couldn't wriggle out of his grip, she tapped him on the arm.
Letting go off her, Genji got back to his feet as she took in deep breaths. "Score for Genji." he said with a grin, holding up a finger, "I'm up!" before holding out his hand, offering his hand.
"Where did you learn how to count!?" Akali shouted, but she accepted his help as she was pulled back to her feet, "We're even."
"Come on, Wise Girl!" Genji said with a laugh, "You know I was always better with numbers!"
"What?" Akali said with a laugh of her own, punching him against the shoulder, "You were never better at anything Immortal Dragon!"
"Where the fuck have you been." another tall man with a face full of scars said, "We thought you got lost, or killed."
"Not yet, Kenpachi." Genji said with a grin, "Sorry."
The trio laughed before Genji was pulled into a hug by Kenpachi, before Akali took a hold of him and rubbed his head while the other Shashou came up to greet their brother. All while this was happening, Asami just stood at the door watching the scene unfold.
"Knew you'd make a fucking entrance."
Their attention was drawn to a man in the back, who comes walking up.
While this man clearly was a Shashou as well, he seemed much older than everyone else in the room. This man of Water Tribe descent was completely bald, wrinkles decorated his aged face but his beard showed that his hair had gone completely grey. Also instead of the amber dragon eyes, his eyes where a piercing blue, his pupils horizontal slices.
The elder Shashou gave the same grin as Genji had, "Welcome home."
"Master Roshi." Genji said, "It's been a while."
"That it has, my boy." Master Roshi said, embracing Genji in a father like hug before his attention and everyone else fell on Asami, "Brought someone with you, I see."
"Yes, I did." Genji said, walking over to stand next to her, "This is Asami Sato."
"Well, nice to meet you Ms. Sato." Master Roshi said, placing his fist against his open palm before bowing, "It's about time Genji brought his girlfriend home to meet the family."
"What? No way she is his girlfriend." Akali shouted with a laugh, leaning on the table with her goblet in hand, "She's way too pretty for him."
"Up yours." Genji said flipping her off.
Not to be outdone, she flipped him right back off.
Asami sat with Genji, a goblet was pressed in her hands as the Shashou's continued celebrating, feasting and telling stories of their year in the world.
"...So he was like, 'this door is reinforced! Try tearing this down!'. So I took my elixir and so I did." Kenpachi said, "You should have seen his face when I said 'Don't blame me. Your the one who suggested it!'."
The group laughed, Asami did as well but she was surprised how Genji was laughing. He actually seemed content and happy to be back with his family, just sitting there, drinking and telling stories. The only time she had ever seen him like this, was when he was with her.
"Each of your faces is cause enough for celebration. You're safe, you made it back, you made it home." Master Roshi said as he stood up, "Here is to another winter together!" raising his goblet.
"To our sisters!" Kenpachi shouted, raising his goblet.
"To our brothers!" Akali shouted, raising her goblet.
Genji cleared his throat before standing up, "To this winter together." Genji said, "Because it might be our last."
"What?" Master Roshi said.
"There is a war in the South Pole, a douchebag from the North called Unalaq is intending to free a evil spirit named Vaatu." Genji spoke to everyone in the room, "Both spirit portals are open, and once Harmonic Convergence happens, which is only a few days away, Vaatu will be set free. If he succeeds, the world as we know it, is over."
"We will not only be fighting the army of the North but also dark spirits." Genji continued, "I know it's not usual for a Shashou to do anything without being paid for it... I'm willing to cover the expanses. We need as many of us as..."
"Let me stop you right there." Akali said as she stands up, "It's true Shashou's don't do anything if we don't get paid. But that's for clients, that rule doesn't apply to family."
"Genji, my brother." Kenpachi said with a wicked grin gracing his scarred face, "You had me at fighting the North."
Every last one of the Shashou chimed in, each and everyone was willing to take the fight to Unalaq and the North, willing to spill blood for their brother.
"I guess our winter break is put on hold." Master Roshi said with a chuckle, "Everyone get your gear ready and sharpen your swords. I'll prepare the elixirs and we will all leave once they are ready."
Asami looked as they stood up to get ready for war, what surprised her the most was how willing and easy it was to convince them. Though knowing how Genji seemed to enjoy a good fight, it wasn't too far fetched to think that those people, his kind, those who trained with him since childhood would also be a bit bloodthirsty.
"Ms. Sato." Master Roshi said turning to Asami, "If you go with Akali, she will help you fit out some Shashou gear."
"Not to look a gift ostrich horse in the mouth." Asami said, "But I thought that was only for Shashou who completed their training?"
"Well yes." Master Roshi said, "But since your Genji's mate, that makes you family as well."
"Have to warn you though, Princess. The only color we have is black." Akali said, "And very, very dark gray!"
Over at the South Pole, Team Avatar and the airbending family arrive at the White Lotus compound. Outside the healing hut, Senna was out there waiting for them.
"Mom!" Korra said hugging her mother, "Where's Dad?"
"During the battle last night, Unalaq wiped out the entire southern resistance." Senna said, "Iroh's team tried to save him but your father got captured."
"We'll get him back, ma'am." Ichiro assured her.
They walk inside of the healing hut, where many of the injured men and the female healers. As they approach Katara turns to see the others.
"What happened?" Katara said upon seeing the state her eldest granddaughter was in.
"Her soul is trapped in the Spirit World." Tenzin said.
"Oh my goodness!" Katara said, leading them too a pool filled with spirit water, "How long has she been away?"
"Almost a week." Kya said as Jinora's body was placed in the water, "I've tried to keep her energy flowing, but I can feel her slipping away. You're the only one who can help her now, Mom."
Once her body touched the water, Katara began to bend the water in an attempt to heal Jinora.
"How much longer can she survive like this?" Tenzin said.
"I don't know." Katara said, shaking her head, "But she is very strong to have lasted this long."
"Of course she is." Ichiro said, "She's my sister after all..."
Some time later the group had gathered in the main compound building where Team Avatar, Tenzin, Bumi and Kya had gathered with Iroh.
"Unalaq's got the southern portal surrounded." Iroh informed, "My forces have locked him down, but we had no luck in flushing him out. We're at a impass."
"Harmonic Convergence is only a few hours away." Korra said, "Genji and his back up isn't here yet... We have to break through the enemy lines ourselves and get to the portal now."
"Sounds like a suicide mission." Bolin said.
"You know, I was in a similar situation once." Bumi said, "My platoon had crawled through the desert with no water for a week! But when we finally located the only oasis for a hundred miles, it was surrounded by angry sandbenders. I realized our only chance to get to the water was to drop in from above. So I fashioned together a catapult, and with the help of a few well-trained hog monkeys..."
"Enough of your ridiculous lies!" Tenzin shouted, "Can't you see that the fate of the world and Jinora's life depends on what we do here today!?"
"Hold on, Bumi's got a point." Ichiro said, standing up, "We don't have a catapult and hog monkeys, but we have a flying bison. Maybe we can attack from above."
"I think I know where your going." Iroh said, "We launch a full out assault on the fortress as a distraction. Then you guys can fly into the spirit portal on Oogi when you see an opening."
"Sounds like a plan." Ichiro said, "Just hold out until Genji and his back-up arrive."
As Oogi approaches the compound, Iroh's United Force where engaging Unalaq's at his compound as fire, water and earth clashed against the water and ice from the North. Spirits encircle the portal to the Spirit World from above.
"There are spirits everywhere." Korra said, "I don't see an opening."
"Let's circle around and see if we can find a way in from the other side." Tenzin said.
But just then the spirits begin their attack. They fly closer to the ground, as spirits now encircle Oogi. Some of the spirits have already managed to attach themselves to Oogi as the skybison dives away from the spirit.
Another spirit jumps on, but is quickly airbent away by Ichiro as Kya begins waterbending the spirits away.
"The spirits are weighting Oogi down!" Tenzin shouted, "We're losing altitude!"
"Get off of him you sticky, nasty little blob of goo!" Bumi shouted as he begins kicking a spirit. He is tripped by the spirit, but he grabs hold of it before falling.
Oogi begins to fall and crash due to the spirits, launching his occupants over him and send them crashing into the ground.
Ichiro could see Northern Water Tribe soldiers approaching from the compound as his vision began to fade to black.
"Korra... I'm so sorry. I failed you."
Ichiro began to regain consciousness, feeling his arms tied behind him with metal ropes, to his side he felt Korra. On his other side was Mako, while he couldn't move he was pretty sure everyone else was
"Don't give up." Korra said, "Harmonic Convergence isn't here yet. We still have a chance."
Ichiro let out a groan as he got Korra's attention, "Hey." she said, "Your alright?"
"Been better." Ichiro said forcing himself to smile.
The front of the tent was opened and Unalaq flanked by his two children as they enter
"Congratulations, everyone." the Northern Chief said as he gave a sarcastic applause, "You've all got front row seats for the beginning of a new world order."
"You don't know what you're doing, Unalaq." Korra said struggling against her restrains, "Freeing Vaatu won't make you powerful, it will only make you a traitor to everything good that's happened over the last ten thousand years."
"You think what Avatar Wan did was good? Driving almost all the spirits from this world?" Unalaq said, "The Avatar hasn't brought balance, only chaos. The Spirits attempted to bring back balance and what do humans do? Create monsters to kill them. You call yourself the bridge between the two worlds, but there shouldn't be a bridge: we should live together as one."
"Even if Vaatu escapes, I'll put him right back in his prison!" Korra said determent, "Just like Wan did."
"It's true that when Wan fused with Raava he tipped the scales in her favor, but this time I'll be here to level the playing field." Unalaq said, "When Harmonic Convergence comes, I will fuse with Vaatu, and together we will become the new Avatar: a Dark Avatar. Your era is over."
"Think about what you're doing! I know that you've always had a deep connection with the spirits, but you're still a man." Tonraq said, "You're still my brother, you're Eska and Desna's father. Are you willing to throw your humanity away to become a monster?"
"I'll be no more of a monster than your own daughter and that psychopath she associate with." Unalaq said, "The only difference is that while she can barely recognize her own spiritual power, I will be in complete alignment with mine. Vaatu and I will be as one. No one will be able to stand against us."
A Northern Soldier comes in, telling him how the United Forces had pulled back and how General Iroh wanted to parley with them.
"Basic warfare, take a few hostages." Unalaq said turning to his children, "Keep them locked up. After the Harmonic Convergence, I will come for Korra."
"Yes, Father." Eska said.
Walking to a tower overseeing the ruined tundra ahead with the brilliant light of the spirit portal behind him, Unalaq walks up to the console. Looking out the window, he was handed a microphone so he could communicate with the United Forces.
But his attention was turned to the lone figure on the ice field, wearing all black leather armor his sword in one hand, a megaphone in the other.
"Unalaq! You big fucking nerd!" Genji shouted through a megaphone, "Where's my fucking money!"
"Surrender Shashou." Unalaq said through a microphone so his voice echoed over the tundra through speakers inside the stronghold, "The Avatar and her friends are my captives. I have an army to send against you, Harmonic Convergence is moments away. There is no way you can win."
"For a big fucking nerd, you're missing the point!" Genji shouted, "There's no throne, there's no version of this where you come out on top. Now, maybe you have your army, but I have something better! Something stronger!"
"And what is that!?" Unalaq shouted back.
"Family!" Genji shouted, throwing the megaphone to the side as the very ground trembled. Over the snow covered grounds, the Shashou of the Ryu Basho comes charging forward on their Ostrich Horses followed by Iroh and the remains of the United Forces.
As she comes riding up, Asami pulls up and lifts him up and back on the riding animal.
"Rain down on them from the tower!" Unalaq ordered, picking up a communicator.
"Yeah... Don't think that's going to work." a unfamiliar female voice said, "They're all kinda dead."
"Who is this!?" Unalaq demanded to know.
"Call me Akali, friend of Genji. Me and Kenpachi infiltrated your towers while Genji gave his speech." she said rather casually, "We keep score on who get's the most kills and your kill gives so much points that it makes it almost impossible for the others to win."
"What's the plan sir?" a Northern soldier said, "They got an army of Shashou's."
"Can we hold them?" Unalaq said slamming the communicator down.
"...They have an army of Shashou's." the soldier pointed out.
"Then hold them off for as long as you can!" Unalaq shouted, turning around to head for the spirit world.
With an army of bloodthirsty, mutated super assassins, the Shashou's and United Forces managed to break through into the compound forcing the fighting in there.
Asami, wearing a similar suit of black leather armor, ducked under a steam of water, before electrocuting the Northern Soldier with her glove. A shard of ice was shot at her, but using his superhuman reflexes, Genji sliced it in half, shattering it.
The couple stood back-to-back, dodging, waving and spinning around in synch, defending and deflecting against the incoming attacks as they sliced, stabbed and electrocuted their way through the Northern Soldiers.
"This might be weird to say!" Genji shouted as he kicked a Northern Soldier, which Asami followed up by electrocuted him, "But your incredible sexy right now."
"If you think this is sexy." Asami said, dropping down so Genji could pierce the charging Spirit, "Wait till tonight."
"...Spirit's I love you." Genji said with a grin.
"Oi, love birds!" Akali shouted body slamming a soldier into the ground while driving a knife through his skull, "Less flirting more killing!"
As the fighting continued in the compound, Korra had attempted to talk Eska and Desna out of helping their father, that was until the fighting had breach the inner compound. The two turned to the tent's entrance to see what was going on, but they where stopped when a bald elderly Shashou, a silver round shield on his arm, comes walking in.
"Ah good." Master Roshi said, "There they are."
Eska and Desna didn't waste any time and started to circle Roshi, who countered their blast of water with his shield. He threw it and it flew past Eska, where it bounced off one of the pillars and hit her in the back of her head. Roshi rushed up to deck Deska in the face before catching his shield and bashing him in the face.
"Well that was easy..." Master Roshi said, holding his back with a grimace, "I'm getting too old for this shit."
He walked over to the group before smashing their chains with a single strike from his shield.
"Who are you?" Korra said as she stood back up.
"Don't worry, I'm on your side." he said, "I am Roshi, Shashou of the Lion Turtle Qiyue Ren and current Grand Master and instructor at the Shashou of the Dragon Qiyue Ren."
"So that was Genji's plan. Get his fellow Shashou's to help..." Ichiro said before his eyes widen, "Oh Spirit, he brought an army of people like him."
"Damn, he knew you would say that." Master Roshi said, "Now I owe him fifty Yuan."
Exiting the tent, they saw that the battle was almost over, as Genji and Asami comes running over to them.
"Hey guys!" Asami said cheerfully.
"...Looking good Asami." Korra said with an approving nod, noticing her outfit.
"I agree, the black really brings out her eyes." Genji said, cleaning off his blade, "I think we got all of them."
"Pretty much." Iroh said as he comes walking up flanked by Akali and Kenpachi, "Few stragglers, and a bunch of spirits coming out of the portal. Unalaq fled into it the moment we breached the walls."
"Then we know where to find him." Akali said, cleaning her dagger before putting it back in the holster strapped to her boot, "Anyways, end score. I got fifty."
"Fifty and one." Genji said cheerfully, "I win! Now I'm up."
"Fuck." Akali muttered, placing a hand on her hip.
"So what's the plan?" Kenpachi said.
"Well, I guess me and Team Avatar are going into the portal and the rest stays behind and stop anyone else from following through or whatever comes out." Genji said, turning to Korra, "Your okay with that?"
"Sounds like a plan." Korra said with a nod.
"Sounds more like you want all the fun to yourself." Akali said with a grin, "Don't worry, we won't let anyone sneak up on you."
"And if Vaatu manages to escape." Master Roshi said, "We'll be ready."
"She's right." Tonraq said with a nod, "You run into the portal, we'll try to hold off anyone who comes after you."
"No." Korra said, "You're too hurt, you need a healer."
"Don't worry about it, I got him." Akali said with a cheeky grin, offering to help Tonraq by lifting an arm of his over her shoulder, "Oh, that's some muscle. Bet you can give Kenpachi a run for his money."
"Akali... That's Twinkle Toes dad." Genji informed her, "He's married."
"I fail to see the problem." Akali said with a grin which made Tonraq looked a bit unsure about.
"Keep it in your pants, Akali." Master Roshi said, "Kenpachi, give me a hand, will you?"
"Of course, Master." Kenpachi said as the two men lifted Tonraq with an arm over their shoulders, "Come on big guy."
Akali looked rather miffed as she watched her fellow Shashou walk away with Korra's dad, her arms crossed in front of her chest.
"She's like a female Genji..." Ichiro muttered, "Oh spirits..."
"Yeah, so be careful." Akali said giving him a wink, "A Shashou moves from one target quickly to the next."
"Sorry sister." Korra said rather protective as she gripped Ichiro around his arm and pulled it into her chest, "This one is mine."
"...I still fail to see a problem here." Akali said with a grin, directed at both Korra and Ichiro causing both of them to blush at what she was implying.
"He's my grandson." Genji said simply.
"...And there it is. Now I see the problem." Akali admitted with a nod, "Alright, get back safe, cause we have some beers to drink. Good luck Immortal Dragon."
"Don't need luck." Genji said, as the two Shashou fist bumped, "But thanks anyways, Wise Girl."
The two gave the other a nod, before Akali went with Iroh as Team Avatar, the Airbending siblings went into the forest surrounding the Spirit Portal.
"Once we're inside, you go find Jinora." Korra said, "Genji, Ichiro, will take care of Unalaq, while Asami, Mako and Bolin will keep the spirits off our backs, while I close the portal so Vaatu can't escape."
"Seems like a plan." Genji said.
"Wait a second. Worst-case scenario: so we're fighting Unalaq, you close the portals and let's just say something happens to you." Bolin said, "Are we going to be trapped in there for eternity?"
"If everything goes as planned." Korra said, "We'll all walk out together after Harmonic Convergence."
"Yeah." Ichiro muttered, "Because everything always goes according to plan..."
Inside the Spirit World, they came across a tall tree known as the Tree of Time. Spirits encircle the tree as Unalaq waits. Upon their entrance, Unalaq orders the spirits to attack as he led the charge. As they quickly approached, Korra told Tenzin and his siblings to go find Jinora.
The trio immediately run off to find Jinora as Korra enters the Avatar state and dashes forward, leading the charge.
Ichiro airbends unleashing a wave of air, the spirits as they are rebuffed by the airbending. Unalaq leaps off the shadow he was on and begins to waterbend, the water that Unalaq uses to slow his descent by turning it in to ice to slide down.
As he lands he begins to waterbend again. With Asami, Mako and Bolin holding off the spirits with Shashou metal, fire and earth, Genji and Ichiro run forward as he begins to bend his element to stop Unalaq. He was blasted back and had only a second to roll over as Genji's Yamato pierced the place his head had been a few moments ago.
"Where's my money, Unalaq." Genji shouted, sliding under a waterspout which Ichiro followed up with a blast of air, flipping him over.
"I have your money!" Unalaq said landing back on his feet, "Just give me five minutes."
"I don't have five minutes!" Genji shouted as he and his grandson pressed the assault, "Where's my fucking money! What did you do with my money!"
Unalaq attempting to break away from the onslaught, but all he could do was evade and keep moving. He was a that bit too slow, as Genji's sword graced his cheek, causing blood to spill out of it.
Genji dodges Unalaq's attack before Ichiro closed in and used his airbending to enchant his punch sending Unalaq flying backwards into a tree root, where he bounced off it.
The Northern Chief dropped to his knees as he coughed up blood as the world around him looked like a big daze. He look up just in time to see Genji being launched in the air by Ichiro's airbending, and coming down towards him.
With the momentum carried by the wind and with the strength of a Shashou's mutated body, a single swipe from his sword, the last thing Unalaq felt was the blood dripping down all around his throat and neck.
"Long live the..." Genji said, standing up from his landing as Unalaq's head slowly slid from his neck, "...Damn, I had something for this."
At that very moment, a pulse of energy hit the two portals forcing their energy to begin colliding as a wave of energy washed over the planet. From the party in the Spirit World, only Genji was left standing from the sudden wave.
The two portals begin to create electric arcs which hit the Tree of Time and once it stopped it goes briefly dark before energy explodes from the tree. the energy expands and dissipates and then, from the large hole in it, the massive dark spirit that is Vaatu emerges.
"After ten thousand years, I am free!" Vaatu laughed hovering above the Tree of Time looking down at Korra, Genji, Ichiro, Mako, Bolin and Asami, "It's time to conquer Earth!"
"Well..." Genji said, cleaning Unalaq's blood from his sword as the others stood up, "Things are about to get crazy! Let's rock!"
Chapter 20, which is one I was looking forward to, seeing as we get to visit Ryu Basho and get introduced to more Shashou's.
As I was editing this chapter, with the nicknames/titles the Shashou have, I just realized that if Akali was the protagonist it would be called Avatar: Wise Girl.
