Since the beginning of time, there have been worlds unknown to us; worlds
existing independently of ours; worlds that we cannot possibly begin to
fathom. This is the story of one such world.
Long ago it was a land called Sosaria, but though its name was that of a place of magic, the arcane arts were feared by the peoples that inhabited it. This fear was caused by one man, the Dark Lord Mondain.
Mondain conquered the lands of Sosaria and ruled with fear and cruelty. It was not until the arrival of a man named British that Mondain had cause to retreat. British possessed a power known only as the White Light. With the White Light, British drove Mondain from his place of power.
With Mondain gone, the time of rebuilding began. All that remained of Sosaria were four lands: the Lands of the Lord British, the Lands of Danger and Despair, the Lands of the Feudal Lords, and the Lands of the Dark Unknown. But all was not peaceful in Sosaria. Wars often broke for no reason, and rumors circulated of Mondain's return.
Across the void of time and space, the people's call for a hero was answered. A man from Earth quite suddenly found himself in the Lands of Lord British. This hero traveled across the four lands until he found the lair of Mondain and shattered the Gem of Immortality; the source of his power. Thus, the First Age of Darkness ended.
Unfortunately, Mondain had a successor; one who had been both his apprentice, and his consort. Her name was Minax, the Enchantress. Seeking revenge, she traveled to the Hero's home of Earth and twisted it with her evil magic.
When the Hero returned to Earth, he found it was not the same world that he had left. Once mythical beast now roamed freely and gates like those that had brought the Hero to Sosaria existed that allowed one to traverse through time. However, with the aid of Lord British, the Hero journeyed to the Time of Legends and slew Minax, releasing her evil hold on our world. This was the end of the Second Age of Darkness.
All was not quite right with Sosaria yet. Mondain and Minax's unholy union resulted in an even more unholy being. A creature that was half Beast and half Machine; The Exodus! Exodus's plan was not that of rule, but of mindless and wonton destruction.
Once again, the Hero emerged from the odd gate, but this time he could not handle this alone. The Hero recruited three companions from three cities. With the help of the Time Lord, they were able to travel to the Isle of Fire and banish the Exodus for all time. The Third Age of Darkness had come to a close.
The end of these ages was not without their price. Three of the Lands that had embodied Sosaria were lost, and had been since the shattering of the Gem of Immortality. What happened to these lands remains a mystery.
But still, a new dawn awaited Sosaria. Lord British declared himself Sovereign over all that remained, and named his kingdom Britannia. In order to help his subjects lead better lives, and avert the past discord caused by Mondain and his family, he established Eight Virtues for people to live their life by. He named his eight largest cities keepers of each of the Eight Virtues and Shrines were erected in honor of them.
But the people needed more than a King and lofty goals. They needed a Moral leader; one who could embody the virtues. They needed an Avatar.
