I leaned over the fence, watching the beautiful black filly move her paces around it. Samantha clucked to her, making her trot around the arena on the lunge line. The black fillies legs moved in a perfect two beat cadence, making it seem like she was floating on air. Her beautiful coat shined in the weak light that came from the skylights at the top of the arena, and her dished Arabian profile was something I had dreamed of. Samantha clucked to the beautiful filly again, and she began to canter. She had such a lovely canter; she rocked steadily back in forth, making it look like she rode on waves in the ocean. I watched her with very amazed eyes, for she was to be my own!
I had saved up money for about 3 years to purchase her, for I knew, as soon as she was born I wanted to buy her, and I had helped Samantha, my riding instructor, train her for the past year. I was so proud of the little filly, but the only problem was, she had no name!
I was grooming the little filly when Samantha walked into the stall. She held what I presumed to be the papers, and she had come to speak to me about it.
"We need to name this little one Silver." She said, grabbing a brush and rubbing it on the fillies coat.
"I know…but what are we going to name her?" I replied.
"Well, I was thinking along the lines of something having to do with the universe? Since her sire is named Shetan's Magic Star." Samantha replied.
She was speaking the truth. Magic Star was related to Shetan, the great black stallion that won almost all of his races about 70 years ago. Magic Star was Shetan's great, great, grand colt. I smiled at Samantha, and had an idea.
"How about Galaxy?" I suggested.
"That's a good idea. I can send in the registration papers now, thanks Silver!" Putting down the brush, she walked out of the stall and went to the barn office to register Galaxy.
The black fillies coat was now shining again, and free of the lather that she had gained during the lunging process. Her coat was as black as the night sky, her eyes were as bright as the sun. I thought Galaxy was a very appropriate name for her. I stroked Galaxy's ears and spoke to her in a calm, soothing voice.
"Galaxy…what a pretty name. When you come to live at my barn, you will be so happy! But we have to wait a couple more days…you'll see."
Galaxy just stared at me with her luxurious brown eyes, watching as I stroked her velvet-like neck softly. She nickered, and I smiled. I could tell she liked me already.
