One by one, the parents of the Party realize that Steve Harrington is a better parent than them.
Claudia Henderson
"Dusty! You're going to be late for the bus!" Claudia shouted down at her son's room.
"I didn't tell you?" Dustin came down the hall, fixing his hat.
"Tell me what?" Claudia stopped scrambling.
"Steve's taking me to school today." Dustin grabbed a granola bar from the cupboard just when the doorbell rang.
Dustin ran past his mom to the door.
"Steve!"
"Hey squirt."
Steve looked past Dustin to Mrs. Henderson.
"Hey, Mrs. Henderson." he said casually.
"Oh, hi Steve." Claudia was still flustered.
Steve suddenly got a knowing look in his eyes.
"You forgot to tell her I was coming, didn't you." he said turning to the younger boy.
"Maybe?" Dustin sheepishly looked at the floor.
"How many times do I have to tell you?" Steve scolded. "You have to be more responsible when it comes to communication."
"I know!" Dustin exclaimed.
"Well, you're at least a bit better than some of the others." Steve sighed. "Come on, kid. We've got to get you to school on time."
Dustin grabbed his bag and galloped past Steve to the car.
"Have a good day Mrs. Henderson." Steve said, hand on the door. "I'll bring him home around 7?"
"Yeah, that sounds great, Steve," Mrs. Henderson responded, still flustered. "Thanks."
"No problem." Steve closed the door, leaving a confused Claudia Henderson.
She went to the window, watching the duo bicker as they drove away. A friendly bicker.
Was, Claudia wondered, was Steve a better parent than her?
Was he?
Sue Sinclair
"MOM!" Erica yelled. "COME QUICK!"
Sue Sinclair ran down the stairs.
"What?" she stopped.
"Lucas biffed it!" her daughter exclaimed. "Really hard!"
"Crap!" Sue said, rushing outside.
It had been that once in a lifetime moment when both of her children were tolerating each other, going out to play outside.
Sue made it to her front porch and saw her son sitting on the side of the street.
She ran down the steps, slowing down when she saw a figure crouching near Lucas.
When Sue got down there, Steve looked up.
"I got it Mrs. Sinclair." Steve reassured her. "He's okay, just scraped up knees and elbows."
Sue looked down at her son and saw that his knees were already wrapped in bandages and one of his elbows was already half wrapped up.
"Are you okay?" she asked Lucas.
"I'm fine mom." Lucas responded, not taking his eyes of Steve wrapping the rest of the bandage around his elbow.
"What happened?" Sue asked, slightly touching Lucas's left knee.
"We were racing our bikes and a rock caught my tire. I tried to catch myself, but it turned out like this." he gestured to his bandages the best he could.
"Where's your bike then?" Steve asked, not taking his eyes off the other elbow he was bandaging.
"I took it to the driveway with mine." Erica said, having come up behind them.
"Nice work, Sinclair." Steve said.
"You don't have to stay Mom." Lucas told her, finally tearing his eyes away from the bandages. "Steve's got it. You can go back to whatever you were doing."
"Yeah, Mrs. Sinclair." Steve said. "I got this."
Sue just nodded, getting up and walking away.
Steve Harrington had a first aid kit in his car?
He was driving through the neighborhood when it wasn't even on route to Loch Nora?
What was happening?
Karen Wheeler
DING DONG!
"Mike!" Karen Wheeler called downstairs. "More of your friends are here!"
"I'll be right there!" Mike yelled back.
Karen sighed, know that he was going to be right here in 5 minutes.
She went and opened the door, expecting more of her son's friends instead there stood Steve Harrington.
"Steve," Karen was surprised, she hadn't seen him for a while. "Nancy's not here, umm."
"Mom move!" Mike shoved his mom.
"Mike!" Steve exclaimed. "Don't push your mom."
Mike rolled his eyes.
"Hey! What did we say about being a jerk."
"Not to be one." Mike muttered.
"Good." Steve gave her son a nod.
"Hey, Mrs. Wheeler." Steve said, turning to her.
"Come on, Steve!" Mike interrupted.
"Fine," Steve said, following the younger boy down to their basement. "Nice seeing you, Mrs. Wheeler."
"Nice seeing you, Steve." Karen said, still surprised about what happened.
Did Steve Harrington just lecture her moody teenage son not to be a jerk?
Woah.
Susan Hargrove
Susan was worried about Max.
She seemed down.
Max had said that she had made friends.
But she still seemed out of it for the last week.
That is until Thursday night, when the doorbell rang.
Billy and Neil were out of town, so it was just the girls.
Max ran to the door.
"Steve!" Max yelled, jumping into his arms.
"Hey, kiddo!" Steve hugged her tightly. "I missed you."
Steve looked past the doorway into the living room.
"Hi, Mrs. Hargrove." Steve said. "I hope I'm not intruding but I just got back from a thing out of town and came by to see Max."
"Oh, you're not intruding at all, Steve." Susan had only met Steve once or twice, but he seemed nice enough and he made Max happy.
Oh.
That's why Max had been down lately, she missed Steve.
The duo had stepped outside to talk for a few minutes.
This gave time for Susan to think.
Max missed Steve so much, that she acted differently, sad.
Max never showed when she was sad, not even when she was told that her parents were getting a divorce.
Weird.
Everyone
The Party's moms got together one campaign night.
When they all had arrived, they saw that Steve was chasing the kids around in the yard, everyone laughing.
"Ever feel like Steve's a better parent than us?" Claudia asked, slightly joking.
"Oh, for sure, he totally is." Joyce agreed.
"What?" Sue asked.
"He bonds with them differently than us." Joyce explained. "Kind of like older and younger sibling relationships."
The mothers were shocked.
"Yeah, that makes sense." Karen finally said.
The other mothers all nodded in agreement.
Just then the kids all came running up.
"Mom!"
"Mom!"
"Mom!"
"Mom!"
"Mom!"
"Hey, hey," Steve came up behind them. "One at a time."
Dustin was the first to speak.
"Can we stay at Steve's tonight?"
"Please?"
"Please?"
"Please?"
"Ok, I'm going to stop this one." Sue said, smiling. "I'm good with it. What about you guys?"
"I'm fine with it." Claudia said.
The other moms nodded.
The kids all started to high five each other, turning to leave.
"Wait! What do you say?" Steve stopped them.
"Thank you." they all said in unison.
"I'll have them home between 1 and 2?"
"Sounds good with us." Karen said.
Steve nodded, running to catch up with the kids.
"He's going to be a great parent someday." Susan remarked.
"I think he already is." Joyce said.
