Evelyn's Story

"I'm ready mommy!" Matty jumped out with a cape on his back and a pair of brown cowboy boots on his feet. His mother looked at him with pursed lips. If his caregiver weren't such a sweetheart she would have made him change but she smiled at him.

"You look great baby. Did you brush your teeth?" Evelyn crouched down to her son's level. The way he averted his eyes gave him away.

"Not exactly." His vocabulary at four astounded her sometimes; she felt like she was talking to an adult, she cocked her head and gave him a look.

"You need to go do that pal; you're going to make me late for work." She ruffled his hair and stood up.

"Okay!" Matty took off with his arms in the air like superman and "flew" to the bathroom.

Stepping up to the mirror by her door, Evelyn began to fix her hair, as she hadn't had the time to do it before fixing breakfast. She lifted the soft brown tendrils into a clip in the back of her head; she turned her head and examined it in the mirror from a new angle. She gave her reflection a soft smile, satisfied that it looked good.

The phone rang, and for some reason it made her jump. Her heart was pounding as she made her way over to the ringing telephone, stepping over toys that her son had brought out but had yet to pick up.

"Hello?" she brought the phone up to her ear. There was a long pause; all she could hear was a soft distortion in her ear, like maybe the person was on a cell phone.

"Evelyn." A voice spoke ever so softly to her, it was female, and it sounded weary. Something in her voice sounded urgent but it was very faint like it was coming from far away. She cupped her hand over her exposed ear so that she could hear better.

"This is Evelyn. You'll have to speak up I can barely hear you." Her voice automatically grew louder. There was another long pause and Evelyn's eyebrows furrowed slightly, an uneasy feeling accumulated in her stomach.

"Tell Dillon I will always be with him, he's just a baby. I want him to remember me as the mother he knew, not who I was in the end. Please." The voice was still just above a whisper.

"Tell who?" Evelyn asked into the phone in utter confusion, the line went dead before an answer was given, fear washed over her body, the voice had been utterly eerie and haunting.

"I'm back!" Matty jumped out. Evelyn gasped as she whipped around, stifling a scream that threatened to emerge from her mouth. She held her hand over her pounding heart and bent down to speak to her son.

"Oh god don't yell like that sweetie." She was out of breath and her son could clearly see fear in her eyes.

"I'm sorry mommy. Are you okay?"

"Yeah you just scared me a little bit but it's all right. Don't jump out like that okay?" she was still a little breathless.

"Okay." Matty nodded his head.

"Let's take you to Mandy's okay? I'm going to be late for work." She took his hand.

"Okay mommy." Matty picked up a toy to bring with him before his mother led him out of their apartment.
