His simple jog had turned into a fast sprint as he saw what was before him. Four shadowed figures waited for him not far ahead. i PLEASE let it be them./i he pleaded silently. i Oh God let it be them./i
He got closer, and yet the shadows seemed to drift further away from him. Yet, he could still make out the features. Yes, they were his friends. Though they weren't how he had seen him last. They were as he had seen them three days ago. Three days that seemed like three eternities. One by one, they had slipped away from him.but here they were again, as if nothing had ever happened. All remained motionless. All except McVries.
"Ray," he stated plainly. "Ray, Ray, Ray," he repeated and shook his head. "What're you doing?"
The question came as a shock to Garraty. "What do you mean? I'm.."
"Ray you're throwing your life away. That's what you're doing. You have a girl. You have a family that loves you and cares for you. You have the power to have anything you ever dreamed of. Garraty don't throw it away! Is that what Jan is to you? Trash?"
His mind filled with images of Jan. How she looked. Her smiling face, her dazzling eyes, all that was perfect openly displayed in this youth. Another image made way into his mind. She was there alright. Her eyes had lost their sparkle, and her smile had faded. Tears now fell from her eyes as she gazed at the ground. In the ground were a hole, and a large casket. The scene then moved to the headstone, which declared; RAYMOND GARRATY, TOOK HIS LAST BREATH AFTER A LONG WALK ON MAY 4TH. WE WILL NEVER FORGET MAINE'S OWN. RIP.
Tears now stung his own eyes. i I love her./i
"I love her!" He didn't realize he had been saying this out loud. Nor did he care. "I love Jan.I love her.God I love her."
"So don't make her cry. Rejoin her.come back to her."
The figures faded. Everything faded. Black was all that he could see. Someone was calling his name. No, a lot of people were calling his name. It was a steady chant, as he had vaguely remembered from before. "Garraty.Garraty.Garraty." but one voice stood out. "Ray! Ray!" This one was different. There was no artificial concern. There was an urgency to it. "Ray! Come on you have to stay with me! Get up! Please Ray!" His body became heavier. Agony seared through his legs once again, and he was painfully reminded of where he was. He sat up and the pain tore up his back. He let a moan escape and quickly Jan was by his side. She put a reassuring hand on his shoulder and helped him up. "It'll all be ok," she said. Her voice was strangely soothing. "I promise."
