"Did you know that if you wish on a falling star, your wish will come
true?"

"It's such a pretty lie isn't it?"
"Yes, it is."
"The way it can give one person so much hope, and yet make someone else believe there is no point in living."
"Truly spectacular."
"I once wished on a star. Did you know? When I was a child."
"Really? Did it work?"
"No, of course not. Fairy tale endings never come true in real life."
"How so?"
"Well, in fairy tales, there is always a princess and a price who fall in love and live happily ever after. Have you ever heard of someone who that has actually happened to? In real life?"
"None at all."
"Of course not. That's because it's impossible. The world today is chaos. Complete and utter chaos. Nobody is truly happy. Whether it be because of how expensive things are, and how hard it is to keep a family together, or the high death rates, this world isn't in good condition."
'Too true."
"Wouldn't it be nice though?"
"I'm not sure. What are you referring to?"
"Fairy tale endings. Wouldn't it be nice if they ever came true? Even once? Even if it's only for one or two people. Of course, for that to happen, they would have to isolate themselves from the prying hands of society, and go live on their own. But if they were to do that, they couldn't be happy."
"Why not?"
" 'Why'? Because they would be alone."
"But what if that's what they want?"
"Perhaps. Still, even if that was what they wanted, or maybe even their children as well, it would be ruined."
"I must ask again. Why?"
"Because, if they have a child, that child would not be happy due to the isolation that is seemingly required for the parents happiness. The child would want it's own mate, but it would have to live knowing that would never happen. And that would ruin the child."
"So then the couple could simply not have children."
"Ah, so it would seem, but people die. It is human nature. If one of the two were to die, that would leave the other all alone, due once again to the isolation."
"The it seems you must eliminate the isolation, right?"
"If they did that, they would have to succumb to the greedy nature of today's common man."
"Then, I suppose there truly is no such thing as a fairy tale ending."
"Precisely my point."
"If I may ask, what was it you wished for, when you wished on a falling star?"
"Me? Honestly?"
"Yes."
"Well, to be perfectly honest, I wished for someone to love, who would love me back. Me, and only me."
"Sounds like those books in Chobits."
"Yes, I imagine it does. Then again, it is the same thing. All I want, is someone just for me. But, the harsh truth is, no matter how many times you wish for something, it will never be more than what it is; a wish. A desire. Something we want, but will never have."

'Thank you. Now, if you don't mind, may we go back inside? I'd prefer not to think about this anymore."

"Just go open the damn door."
