A/N: "Of Kings and Knights" is my first story under the pen name "Chibiryu." And I believe it's also my first fluff fic.so please be lenient ;_; The plot is based off of a wonderfully written Kingdom Hearts story, though I'm afraid I lost the URL for it. *sigh* How typical of me.

Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys reading this! It's short, yes, but at least it's fluff ^_^

Of Kings and Knights

The last few waves of summer finally subsided as a cool breeze filtered the air. Beautiful streaks of red and orange, yellow and violet, painted the sky in an awe-inspiring scenery; just beyond the horizon, a brilliant ball of fire started its daily descent into the underworld.

"Yami?"

There was no response from the person named "Yami", only a subtle nod of tri-colored hair. Almost immediately, the caller came forth and plopped himself next to his silent companion.

When there was no exchange of words for the next few minutes, the caller finally said, "What are you doing, Yami?"

As if he was some stone carving, the other continued to stare into the horizon, hardly even glancing at the boy beside him. If fact, the only thing that made him less of a statue was the slight flexing of rose-colored lips when he spoke, and maybe even the occasional blinking of thick, black lashes.

"Watching the sunset."

"Ah.I see."

The conversation, if it could even be called that, ended abruptly as the two fell into another lengthy silence. Yami's companion fidgeted at the stillness, constantly shifting around as if looking for a comfortable position to sit in. Needless to say, he was just trying to find something to preoccupy himself with, though his anxiety couldn't really be blamed; anyone sitting next to the demure game king would feel a bit edgy.

Suddenly, as though someone had pressed the play button on the VCR, the child jumped up and exclaimed proudly, "Guess what, Yami? I'm the king of the day!"

For the first time since his arrival, Yami turned toward the boy, who currently had both hands on his hips in a proud - if not slightly ludicrous - posture. Arching a perfect brow and deciding to humor his little friend, Yami asked, "Oh really, Yugi? Are you?"

Yugi nodded vigorously, golden bangs bobbing along with the motion. "Yep! And you're the king of the night! But of course, I'm a bigger king than you are!"

"And why's that?"

Twin amethyst eyes stared at Yami as if he had just been hit on the head with a rubber mallet and didn't quite realize it. "Don't you remember? You once told me - a long, long time ago - that even in the darkest time there's still a speck of light that gives hope. I'm your light, Yami, just like you're my darkest." Dropping the sentimental speech, Yugi added, "And since I'm the super-important light, I'll need someone to protect me, so you can be my knight, too!"

At Yami's amused smile, he hurried on before the other could speak. "Of course, just because you're two things doesn't mean you're better than me. I'm still the #1, super-duper important king of the day, right Yami?"

Yami looked up in time to see the setting sun disappear behind the child, bathing him in soft rays of orange light. Amethyst orbs peered innocently out at the game king, and in nature's spotlight, the boy seemed to be shimmering.

Yami blinked and captured the angelic moment before whispering, "Yeah."

And then he stood up.
