More random Gondolinfulness!
Hidden Kingdom, Hidden King
The Hidden City of Gondolin had stood for three hundred and forty-five Years of the Sun before Turgon broke his silence and rode forth to war. A great battle was made before the gates of Angband, a battle which would later become known as Nirnaeth Arnoediad. There fell Fingon, High King of the Noldor, at the feet of Gothmog, the Lord of Balrogs, along with many other valiant men and elves. At times, it seemed Turgon himself would be lost.
But he prevailed, and with the aid of Hurin Thalion returned to his kingdom, never again to break his secret leaguer until the city fell. But although his army returned defeated, the king himself was more prideful than ever.
With the fall of Fingon, Turgon took up the mantle of the High King of the Noldor, the fifth to hold that title. Behind him stood the shades of Finwe and Feanor, Fingolfin and Fingon. Many had died in the time since the Exiles had reached Beleriand, and although he did not know it, Turgon would be the last High King to rule here. Upon his death Ereinion, called Gil- Galad, the son of Fingon, took the throne, and in a short time moved to Lindon, south of ruined Beleriand.
But Turgon knew this not, and he returned in pride to his hidden kingdom. Although he was High King in title only - none knew where his citadel lay, and no orders came from the city to the Noldor - he wore the role with unsurpassable majesty. In his last days his spirit shone as that of the Ainur, and it took a great many Balrogs to subdue him at the end.
But subded he was, whipped and bleeding. Finally his spirit fled to the Halls of Mandos, and Turgon, greatest of the High Kings, fell in his tower. His city in ruins, his secret betrayed, he had no more reason to live.
