AN/ This takes place before Jess leaves.

"The First Annual Stars Hollow Midnight Mystery Under the Stars." Lorelai read out-loud to Rory.

"What's that?" Rory asked.

They were standing in front of a white and blue banner that was hanging from the entrance of the gazebo.

"I don't know. It says, 'For more details stop by Patty's Dance Studio."

"Let's go." Rory said.

They walked to Miss Patty's, and on the way they tried to guess what event the banner was for.

"I think it's a real mystery like, who switched the Mini Wheats with the Cookie Crisp, in the market on Saturday." Lorelai joked.

"I think that banner is advertising a who-dun-it mystery party at midnight." Rory said sensibly.

"You're boring." Lorelai stated.

"You're dramatic." Rory accused.

"Okay. We're at Patty's. Truce?" Lorelai asked.

"Truce." Rory agreed.

"Patty." Lorelai tapped Miss Patty on the shoulder.

"Lorelai, darling! Rory, sweetie! How are you?" Miss Patty smiled.

"Confused. What is the mystery thing about?" Lorelai asked.

"Oh! It's absolutely wonderful! Taylor had a wonderful idea for a new town tradition. It's the most wonderful thing!"

"So I've heard." Lorelai smiled and nudged Rory with her elbow.

"What the activity?" Rory asked.

"It's a who-don-it party! It takes place tonight at midnight. Everyone assembles in the town square, and tries to figure out who kidnapped Kirk and where he is being held captive! You split up into teams and the winning team gets a trophy! It's all in good fun." Miss Patty explained.

"Nice. We'll be there." Lorelai said.

They left Miss Patty's and headed for the market.

"So what are we shopping for?" Rory asked.

"We're loading up on junk food, so that when we solve the mystery first tonight, we can reward ourselves with chocolate!"

"You're confident." Rory commented.

"I'm determined to figure out the mystery before anyone else. And you're gonna help me!" Lorelai declared.

Rory sighed, "This is going to be interesting."
