Based on 'Vincent' by Don McLean
This was inspired by a passage at the end of RotK, after Frodo had left from the Grey Havens.
What were Sam's thoughts as he stood there far into the night? He certainly would have thought back to the parting with Frodo earlier that evening, when Frodo sailed away holding the Phial of Galadriel, which Sam referred to as 'The lady's glass' in the book. He may have thought about his memories of Frodo on Mount Doom. He may have thought about how little honour Frodo had in his own country after returning from the quest.
Disclaimer: I don't own Frodo and Sam. *Sob* They're welcome here any time. I don't own the song, which was written by Don McLean. Tolkien doesn't say whether it was a starry night as Sam stood there, but for the purposes of this song it was. Also, when Frodo fought with Gollum on Mount Doom, for all we know, he may have sustained injuries Tolkien didn't mention. I've invented one that fitted this song.
Frodo
Starry, starry night
Dark fell as you sailed away
As I watched from Havens Grey
With eyes that knew the darkness in your soul
Shadow on the sea
You've sailed so far away from me
Looking for a remedy
For hurts acquired when you saved our land
Folks don't understand
Seems that no one wants to see
Just how you suffered for their liberty
And how you strived and kept them free
They would not listen; they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
Starry, starry night
The lady's glass, its brightened blaze
Shone into the evening haze
Reflected in your eyes of china blue
I'm so torn in two
I long to sail right after you
But Rosie waits, I know it's true
That Elanor will need my loving hand
Folks don't understand
Seems that no one wants to see
Just how you suffered for their liberty
And how you strived and kept them free
They would not listen; they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
For they could not love you
But still, your heart was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that evil mountainside
You risked your life as only you would do
But I could've told you, Frodo
The Shire would never honour
One as beautiful as you
Starry, starry night
Memories have left their mark
As I stand here in the dark
With eyes that watch the sea and can't forget
All the evil that we met
The ring bearer in orcish clothes
With bleeding hand and bloody nose
Lay crushed and broken where we'd feared to go
Folks don't want to know
Seems that no one wants to see
Just how you suffered for their liberty
And how you strived and kept them free
They would not listen; they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will
