Hi!
Okay, this is a little fic that has nothing at all to do with the "Where the Heart Lies" series. I hope you all don't mind a little break for a moment or two. This one is kind of I hope you all like it.
Disclaimer: I do not own Inu-Yasha or any of the characters therein. *** *** *** *** *** *** Night and Day Chapter 1
Kagome lay back against her pillow with a sigh. Tomorrow her cousin, Rio, was coming to live with her. She tried again to remember what Rio was like. She remembered a quiet girl who never smiled or cried. Rio was neither nice or mean, or anything else in particular. Kagome felt a tinge of guilt as she recalled an incident from years back.
~~Flashback~~
Kagome sat on the floor of her uncles New Orleans apartment playing with her dolls. A little girl in a white dress with long raven hair sat on the edge of the sofa looking straight forwards, Every once in a while Kagome looked at her, but their eyes never met, and the little girl on the sofa never let her eyes stray from the painting she was looking at. In the next room adults chatted away happily. Over the radio an orchestra played Beethoven 4th symphony.
"Rio," Kagome said a little cautiously. Her cousin turned to look at her for the first time since Kagome had entered the room. Rio's green eyes looked hollow and emotionless at Kagome.
After a few minutes of silent staring Kagome stood up angrily. "Are you just gonna stare at me!" she shouted. The adults stopped talking.
"What would you have me do, cousin?" Rio asked in an icy tone. Kagome stopped, she hadn't thought of an answer to that.
"Well. . ." she stammered. "Not stare at me that's for sure! Why are you so weird?" She asked in an exasperated voice.
"Kagome!" her mother said firmly, towering over her. "Apologize this instant!"
"I'm sorry," Kagome said under her breath, while looking down at her shoes.
"No apologies, cousin," Rio said in the same monotonous voice, which seemed quiet out of place on a young child.
Later that night, when everyone else was sleeping Rio whispered through the darkness to Kagome, "I'm not as weird as you Kagome."
~~End Flashback~~
That's how Rio kept coming back up in her mind, like a ghost child. There was something about the girl that both frightened and fascinated Kagome, and for a minute she thought that perhaps her cousin living with her would not be so bad.
