Visions of The World

My booted footsteps echoed loudly upon the worn green bricks as I strode slowly into the main area of the city. My friends had already logged off and returned to the real world, but I had decided to remain within this virtual reality game, aptly named The World, for a while longer. My thoughts, however, were not on my friends but more focused upon the extravagant city that lay before me. Loosely fingering my magical staff in nervousness, I stopped dead in my tracks as the full scope of the city came into view. Carmina Gadelica, the crown jewel of Lambda Server, was truly a bustling metropolis that was still active this late at night.

The green brick theme was undoubtedly the dominant aspect of Carmina Gadelica. Not only was the main street constructed of these but this pattern continued to the seven or eight-story buildings that towered over the heart of the city. Ahead of me, two of these green-bricked pillars held aloft a red and orange banner that proclaimed to all, "Welcome to Carmina Gadelica" in bright gold letters. One player, chest partially covered in blue body paint and arms lightly crossed, leaned heavily against one of the pillars. His eyes were closed, and from the slight snoring coming from him, it was clear that he had fallen asleep at his computer terminal.

Resuming my previous pace into the city, I then noticed that I had unknowingly stepped into a busy marketplace. Carmina Gadelica was known all throughout The World as a shopper's paradise, and tonight it ultimately showed. The vendors, dressed in every color from green to purple to gold, endlessly called out to passersby in an effort to sell their merchandise. Like a moth to a flame, these unsuspecting people were unwittingly lured in. The numerous colors that danced about behind the merchants' tables only added to this hypnotic feeling.

However, it was not these conniving vendors but the players themselves who truly gave the city its namesake. Everywhere I looked, people were running about in a frenzy, seemingly attempting to be in two places at once. Several small groups had formed throughout the main street with characters from all classes idlely chatting about every topic that could be thought of--the weather, upcoming sports events, and even school assignments. Passing by one motley group, I overheard two blade users trying to make a trade over a new sword one of them had found on a recent dungeon adventure. Glancing off to my left, I spotted a brown-robed sorcerer with white hair and red face markings and a heavy axe user with light blue robes and white wings. The two sat on one of the city's many benches, smiling softly at each other and lightly holding the other's hand.

Unfortunately, my time here in this world was now over. Far away--in another life perhaps--I heard a voice calling out, warning me that supper was almost ready. I merely nodded in understanding and gazed up at the clear night sky. As tantalizing as this city was, reality beckoned and could be ignored no longer. Giving Carmina Gadelica one final glance, I swore to the stars that I would return as my character disappeared in a halo of golden rings, returning me to my bedroom.

[Author's Notes]

This was originally an English assignment I had to turn in. I was told to describe a place, and me being the kinda guy I am, I chose to use the Root Town of Lambda Server. My assignment has not been graded, but when it is, I will post my results in the review page.

Did anyone catch the character references I put in there? I just put them in there in case anyone who knew of .hack//SIGN would catch them. :)
