Zoe - part 1
For outsiders Zoe seemed to have a perfect life. She had recently moved with her mother, her twinbrother and stepfather to Everwood.
The stepfather Robert worked as a banker and had seen an ad about an employment at a bank in Everwood. He thought that it sounded interesting and talked with his family about the job and the move they would be forced to do if he applied for the job and got it.
The mother, Lorraine hadn't protested. She was raised in a small town and had nothing against leaving the big city of San Diego to live in Everwood.
The two 16-years old twins didn't protest either when they found out about the job and the move. Not that it would had helped what they said. Robert controlls the family with an ironhand.
Robert applied for the job and got it. And now they were in Everwood. The small town that would be their home from now on.
They had bought a nice home at the outside of the town. There was a thought behind that choice. That way Robert could run his family without any outsiders meddling in.

Everyone that claimed that they knew Robert would say that he was nice and charming man, a loving and devoted husband and a wonderful stepfather to Zoe and Jamie. What they didn't know was that under that fasade was a man that would drink quite often, am na who always wanted things to be done his way and who wouldn't hesitate to turn into physical abuse if he didn't think that he was obeyed by them.
Unfourtenly it was only one person in the family who was the target of this violence. That person who had that bad luck was Jamie.
He could treat his wife and Zoe pretty good. That meant that he never hit them. The other abuse was still there. He could say horrible things to them. But he never turned violent towards them. It was probably some kind of principal that he had about not hitting women. Instead Jamie would be the punchbag.
He had some rules about that. He never hit Jamie in the face. If he did then people would start suspecting that something was wrong and he would get into trouble.
Lorraine didn't know about all the thing that Robert did to Jamie. She knew about the verbal abuse and emotional abuse, but not about the physical abuse. He knew how to hide the bruises.
Zoe on the other hand knew exactly what he did. But she was afraid to tell anyone about it. Robert had told her once that he would hurt Jamie even more or maybe even kill him if she said anything. So she didn't know what to do about it. She wasn't sure how serious he was about his threats. Deep inside she didn't thing that he would go as far as killing someone, but of course if he felt to pressured by someone and got to desperate, then he might go that far.
She tried to behave so Jamie wouldn't be punished for something that she had done. Jamie was also trying to behave. Sometimes it worked, Robert would leave him alone for days. Other day it didn't work at all. Those days he could be punished for almost nothing.

Zoe hoped that they would get away from Robert someday. That her mother could get a divorce from him. But that would probably not happen anytime soon. Her mother claimed that she loved Robert, that if you just stayed on his good side then everything would be fine. And he he did make sure that they had a roof over their head, food on the table and clothes.
But how long could this go on? Even she would have to get fed up by this, right?
