Prologue

William Turner, a.k.a. Bootstraps Bill, slowly floated to the top of the water, breaking the surface, barely stirring a ripple. He opened his pale eyes and looked around.

"Finally," he sighed and started to breaststroke toward a shore he saw in the blurry distance.

The tide lapped him onto shore and he used what little strength he had to pull himself onto the sand bar and under a tree. He closed his eyes, happy to be out of the crushing pressure of the damned sea, but it was too bright up here for him. He turned over onto his belly and buried his face into the crook of his arm and fell asleep.

The sun was past set when he opened his eyes and sat up, a task that immensely hurt his back. He rubbed his back and forced himself to stand up, at first it was difficult, he hadn't had to stand for the better part of eight years, he lay in a crumpled heap and sighed.

"We have to get up in order to get somewhere," he said to his body. "You know that right?"

    His body protested.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it's been long, but we have to get this done boy-o." he sighed again and propped himself against the base of a tree. "Thank God I flexed my muscles everyday down there," he smiled and set to work on getting him body to cooperate again.
