Sometime ago, it snowed.
Eiji remembered watching it from the classroom window during chemistry. Still, the pale quietness of it all surprised him when he stepped outside. Students milled about, going about their routines like every other day. Yet, the icy stillness of the air seemed to have muffled the noises - and perhaps his senses as well. Everything blended into one huge swirling mess, with him in the middle of it all, hands gripping his bag, nails digging in.
Red hair against the white, he stood out, the way he always did, tennis courts and beyond. This spotlight however, he did not crave, much less enjoy. The wintry frost, for a reason he couldn't explain, made him feel less like Eiji Kikumaru, like a part of him was left behind in the subtle change of seasons. He felt lost, standing on the steps like he was waiting for something to happen, as if someone might just bring the warm summer sunbeams and the playful breezes back to chase away the cold. Squinting at the sky, he resisted sticking his tongue out at the falling snow as he caught an errant flake of fragile ice on his nose.
Then something funny happened.
He discovered the rest of himself.
He found himself smiling, and everything in his world chose that moment to dim, to become completely redundant, to let the other half of himself - the better half, he decided - shine through. They walked side by side to the tennis courts, and talked about warm fireplaces, snowball fights and hot cocoa. 'Yeah', Eiji Kikumaru thought. He could end up liking winter after all.
