The Matrix Reinstalled: Coincidence?
It had been a beautiful day until the clouds began to roll in. They foretold a storm, but not many seemed to care. Among them was a fanfic author by the alias of Jaded Starlight. All her life, Jaded S had observed hopelessly skewed logic throughout her world. Things so subtle and sublime they went almost unnoticed. it was these instances that nagged in the back of her mind. Like the ever-perplexing question, "why do hotdogs come in packages of ten and hotdog buns come in packages of eight?" Such a bizarre phenomenon that no one could explain or understand. Most simply brushed it aside or ignored the question, but it was the proverbial splinter in Jaded S's mind. Then she saw The Matrix, and upon the first viewing was completely and totally bewildered. She soon came to understand and eventually obsess over it. This obsession was not solely comprised of The Matrix itself, but a certain character within. Yes, Jaded S had become a hopelessly devoted fan of Agent Smith. She could not place exactly what it was about his character that enthralled her so, but the factor of importance was that it did. Thus, through an almost pointless introduction we arrive at the beginning..
Jaded Starlight was walking. She didn't have anywhere specific to be, so she concluded that a walk would be a nice way to pass the time being that her siblings had taken possession of her computer. The thing about Jaded S was this: though she was extremely smart, she often lacked common sense and hence she would trip, walk into walls, collide with objects or individuals, drop things, et cetera. This in mind, Jade walked straight into something she knew could not be real.
She backed away and stared up at a tall man, dressed in a black suit with sunglasses and an earpiece. The words Agent Smith immediately came to mind. She observed the man and logic took over. She almost laughed at herself. jumping to such outrageous conclusions.
"Nice costume dude," She said, "but Halloween's next week."
The man seemed to grit his teeth. "My name is Agent Smith."
Jaded S blinked. Then laughed. "I get it! Excellent choice, he's my favorite. I'm going as Trinity, you should see my boots-"
"I am Agent Smith." He interrupted.
"From The Matrix, I know."
His expression changed. "You know of the Matrix?"
She nodded. did he think she had spent the last five years living in a cave? "Uh, yeah."
"Are you perchance a member of an online community by the name of Fanfiction.net?"
"Ok, are you a stalker or something because this is really getting freaky." This had to be some bizarre coincidence. Agent Smith didn't exist and neither did The Matrix. But what about the hotdog buns? His expression told her that he wanted an answer. "Yes."
"Jaded Starlight."
She froze. This was impossible.
"No. Just highly improbable." He answered her thoughts with a smirk.
She stepped back, mouth agape. "How. you. you can't be."
"Be what? Real?"
She nodded.
"You," he snorted, "virus, have much to learn about the nature of reality."
Her mind screamed. This was real. "Oh my God. you are Agent Smith!"
"In the flesh. so to speak." He replied with a hit of a smirk.
"But how. how."
"Find Selina and the others. Answers are coming." He said as he strode past her.
Jaded Starlight stood dumbly, rooted in that spot for a long time. Agent Smith, a perfectly fictional character had become animate and walked before her very eyes. She had spoke with him, he had been improbably real. Find Selina and the others? Sure, she knew who the others were: Maritas, One Who Spins Flags, Drucilla, Kriszo, Xensin. But where were they? More importantly, how would she find them? Jaded S simply stood, rooted in place waiting, hoping for an answer.
