An Amusing Experience
He towered above Kate at six foot and two inches. He was one-hundred and sixty pounds of solid, raw Marine. His hair was dirty blonde and shorn close to his head in the classic, uniform military cut. His grey and blue summer leave uniform was pressed into crisp pleats, and his black shoes were polished to perfection. His canine teeth were a prominent feature giving him the look of a feral dog: wild and unbridled. He was a Citadel cadet, a raging volcano of unchecked hormones. Kate was amused.
Kate had picked him up from the Citadel earlier that afternoon. She had met him and his friend on the street the day before. He was a sophomore at the Citadel and seemed to be, during the half hour she talked with him, a nice, shy guy who she would like to get to know better. He called her the next day, Sunday, and asked her if she would like to go out and eat lunch with him. She said yes.
On the way to the restaurant he told her about the Citadel and the high school he attended before it. He seemed to be a sweet guy who complimented her, saying things like, "You look beautiful no matter what." What more could an unsuspecting freshman ask for?
But things soon turned from the idealistic to the realistic. He was a man of many pick-up lines. This amused Kate, because while some of them were subtle, most were transparent attempts to sate his desire for female companionship after a long week of being enclosed with 1,970 men.
After lunch they went over to the Palmetto movie theater to see The Road to Perdition. Before the movie began, they sat together in the dim theater and made small talk. As she listened to him, Kate became increasingly amused for his seduction attempts had begun in earnest:
"Girl, you're so bad for me. You make me want to break all the rules," he growled in her ear.
"Uh...okay," Kate nervously fumbled with her words. "That's...that's interesting." What else could she say to something like that?
"Give me your hand." He took her hand and turned it over. He began to caress her palm. "Your skin is so smooth. Did you know that?"
Kate glanced over at him and smirked. She offered, "Sometimes I use moisturizer."
The movie began and Kate watched him out of the corner of her eye. He would turn and gaze at her for a few moments and wait for her to respond. When she didn't he would lean over, leer at her, and say, "Why do you have to tease me like this?"
Tease you like how? She wondered. You are nuttier than a pecan fruitcake. Honey, if I knew what I was doing to drive you to the brink of insanity, then, Darlin', I would stop, for both our sakes. I wonder if I'll be able to escape with my dignity, and sanity, intact from your advances.
Two hours later they both emerged from the dark theater into the warm, golden light of the setting sun. They walked back to her car together, and she tried to find topics that steered the conversation away from her beautiful eyes, alluring southern drawl, and innate, but most likely imagined, sexuality. After dropping him off at the Citadel, Kate burst into uncontrollable laughter. She could not wait to tell her roommate all about her amusing first encounter with a Citadel cadet.
