"Friend In Need, Friend Indeed"
"Hey." I say quietly. "Are you alright?" he asks. This question is so sincerely asked, I can't help but smile. "Yeah, I'm just. bored. And lonely." He frowns. "Lonely? But where is your friend?" He points to the picture of my ex- boyfriend on my nightstand. "Oh, Lucas. He's part of the reason why I'm." I trail off, not really wanting to talk about him. "Lonely?" I sigh, getting kind of irritated. "Yup." "Are you mad at me? Should I leave?" I look up at the tall gentle creature hovering in front of me, so concerned for my welfare. "No. No. Don't leave. Please. I could use your company. I don't really want to do my homework now anyway." "For school?" "Yeah." A tiny tear manages to escape and roll down my cheek. Tarzan peers into my face. "I should leave. You are unhappy." I wipe the tear away angrily. "Yes. I am. But don't leave. Please." He bites his lip, unsure of what to do. He seems very confused about the situation. I'm trying to think of a topic to change the conversation. Then it hits me. "What about Jane?" I ask. He smiles hugely. "We're friends." He says. "But she doesn't make me cry. I make her cry sometimes. I don't know." "You don't know why? Has something happened in her life? I'm sure it's not you she's upset with." "Yes. She is. Sometimes. Not always." "Oh. Do you like her a lot?" He stares at the floor for so long I get up and wander around my room looking at my posters. I'm trying to think of some advice for him. "You need to tell her you like her. You can't just leave her waiting." "I talk to her. I. touch her. Her hair. That is when she gets mad at me." "Maybe she's just nervous too. But you're showing her that you like her. There's nothing wrong with that." He still seems very confused. I sit down on the corner of my small bed and tried to explain myself. "You're trying to "come on" to her. Making a move. You know. Kissing her? Do you understand?" "A.kiss?" he asks uncertainly. "What?" "You haven't done that yet?" I'm figuring he doesn't know what a kiss is. So I stand on my tiptoe and gently kiss his cheek. "That. That was a kiss," I say brightly. He makes a sort of murmuring, throaty noise that I don't quite understand. "Kiss," he whispers, his eyes growing huge for a moment, and a smile passes gently over his face. "Yeah," I reply. I'm unsure of what he seems happy about. He points to my mouth with a quizzical look. "What. Oh! Mouth." He shakes his head. "No. your." "Lips." He grins even bigger and purses his own puffy lips in demonstration. I laugh. "Yes. Kiss lips." I giggle. He cocks his head. "Okay," he says slowly, and without hesitation his head leans quickly forward, his nose bumping mine, but still finding his initial target. "Mmmm. Okay.!" I exclaim breathlessly when it seemed he was having trouble leaving the kiss himself. "What's wrong?" he asks quizzically. I'm still trying to catch my breath. "Nothing. Nothing. If you do that with Jane, she won't know what hit her," I say, while coughing nervously. "I should try that with.her?" He seems quite scared at the possibility. "Yeah, why not." "What if she cries again?" I smiled. "Then maybe you should just ask her what's wrong, okay? But just try it. I'm sure she won't hurt you." He frowns for a moment, but then takes my hand and presses it to his cheek.
"Thank you for telling me." I lean in and give him a quick hug. "No problem. That's what friends are for. We help each other." "You will let me know if you need help?" he asks, pointing to Lucas' picture again. I sigh. "Yes. I will." "Okay." He hugged me again. "I should go." "You let me know what happens with Jane." "I will. Good night, Katie." "Good night, Tarzan." I flick off my room's light, and watch as he hops out my window in hopes of winning his lady's heart.
