It was another Double Potions and Harry sighed as he sat down in between
Ron and Hermione, as usual. As usual, Snape walked in with a twisted smile,
preparing to upset the Gryffindors. As usual, he started the lesson by
telling the students how to make the potion and then walked around,
snarling disgusting comments at poor Neville Longbottom and other
Gryffindors, whilst giving helpful tips to the Slytherins.
Finally, Snape stopped them from their potions.
"Before the potions are tasted," he said with a sly smile at Harry, "I will hand out last lessons homework."
Slowly, he began to hand out the sheets of paper. Every Gryffindor looked disappointed when they received their mark whilst every Slytherin smiled at the results. Hermione was jumping up and down trying to get a look at the pieces of paper to see what mark she'd got.
Harry remembered well the night when he, Ron and Hermione had done the homework. He and Ron had not bothered to make much effort - they knew Snape would fail them regardless of how good their homework was so they didn't see the point in trying. Hermione, however, had not let this sway her and she had still done the homework to her usual great standards.
Harry had a bad feeling that Hermione wouldn't get the good mark she deserved.
Finally, Snape got round to Hermione.
"Ah, Miss Granger!" Snape said finally, a smile appearing on his face, which only appeared when he could upset a Gryffindor.
It all happened in slow motion to Harry. Snape began to hand Hermione the homework, Hermione slowly extended her hand to take it, Harry tried to grab it, Ron (who had got the hint) tried to grab it, but Hermione got it first and there was a loud and long "Nooooooo!"
Ron and Harry exchanged panicked looks.
"I think I'm going to be sick!" Hermione cried.
As Hermione ran out of the room, Harry tried to grab her paper - but Malfoy got their first.
"Not so fast, Potter!" Malfoy said as he grabbed the paper.
The Slytherins began to laugh.
"Oh, look! Looks like Granger didn't get her usual A! It's a C! How will she ever live? You'd better comfort your girlfriend, Potter, looks like she's pretty upset!"
The Slytherins howled with laughter. Pansy Parkinson noticed Hermione at the door and shouted, "Not only am I prettier than you but I'm brainier than you, too, Granger!" She held out her paper, which had a big A on it.
Hermione couldn't take this. She fled from the room and Harry and Ron were about to go after her when Snape shouted at them to continue with their potions.
"Hermione's more of a woman than you'll ever be!" Ron shouted at Pansy, not knowing what to say.
The Slytherins snickered more at this comment and they carried on making jokes until the end of the lesson when they finally got to leave the dungeons - Harry only just escaping a potion tasting from Snape.
Ron and Harry ran to Gryffindor tower as fast as they could. The common room was almost empty so it was obvious Hermione wasn't there. Ginny informed them she wasn't in her dorm.
"Where is she?" Ron asked, panicking.
Professor McGonagall came through the portrait hole at that moment. That was when they knew something was wrong. McGonagall never came into the common room.
"Potter, Weasley, you'd better come with me."
Harry and Ron exchanged worried looks. They followed McGonagall into her office. She shut the door behind them and took a deep breath.
"I'm afraid I have some very bad news. I don't really know how to tell you this ... " She looked as if she was trying to fight back tears. That was when Harry knew it was serious. "Miss Granger has just been the first person to ever use the Avada Kedavra curse on herself."
