Letters from the Dead
Chapter 2 : Dear Deputy Dewey Boy
Dear Deputy Dewey Boy,
How's life? I'm doing okay, believe it or not. I thought you should know. Okay, so I can't give you any cosmic secrets about life after death or anything like that, but I'm here. I'll always be here. I couldn't just leave without telling you.
God, I was such a jerk. Mom always told me to be nice to you and respect you. I wasn't very nice, but I did respect you: I thought you were amazing. My big brother, the cop. Ever since I was a kid, I was so proud of you. I love you, Dewey.
I've been watching you, and once again, you make me so proud. It seems like there's nothing you can't handle. Even half paralized, you're brave and heroic and selfless, and you put yourself on the line for others. It amazes me over and over.
I see you're engaged to . . .what was it, the "antichrist of TV jouralism." Just kidding. I've seen her, too: the way she's changed. Who would have thought? I'll be proud to call her my sister. I also see Sid's quit punching her. That's probably good. Tell them both hi. Tell Sid she's a rock and I'm really proud of all she's survived.
I love you, Dewey, I always have and always will. I don't blame you. Death can't stop famlily.
Tatum
P.S. I'm not supposed to tell you the future, but you and Gale were wrong.
