Raindrops Keep Falling

He never quite knew what to do when she cried.

"Pansy?" he tried, but she wouldn't raise her head, which was buried in her arms atop a desk in the middle of the library.

"Pansy, what's wrong?"

"The raindrops, Draco...the raindrops...they're falling on me. They keep falling on me!"

"Oh," he said gently. He sat down next to her and stroked her straw coloured hair as she continued to cry, "Pansy, we should really go back to the common room-"

"I don't care!" Her voice was muffled, "Nobody notices!"

"Now," he said, his voice oozing with logic and sugar, "We don't want Granger and her friends waltzing in here and seeing you such a mess, do we?"

She raised her head a little and sniffed. His eyes met hers in a clash of grey and green.

"That's what I thought. Let's get you back to the common room, hmm?"

As they headed back to the Slytherin Common Room, his arm around her bony, fragile shoulders, he avoided meeting the sympathetic gazes from all of the teachers and alumni of the school that he passed. He didn't need their sympathy, and neither did Pansy.

It was none of their bloody business why they saw him every night.

As he tucked his best friend into her bed, kissed her forehead and whispered a gentle "goodnight, sweet dreams," he hoped, as he did every night, that he would enter her room the next morning to find only dried tears on her cheeks and a smile on her face.
