Prolouge

She knelt down beside the large oak bed, making no noise. Her sapphire blue eyes never left the face of the young man sleeping there, beneath the black silk sheets.

He was her prince charming… but she knew she could never be his fairytale princess…

She bent down closer, as close as she dared and took in his handsome profile. Her black strands of hair fell down and caressed his cheeks, earning a small stir from him. She quickly jerked her head back and held her breath, fearing he might wake up and find her there.

She tried to move away but her body seemed to have a mind of it's own. She continued to stare at him, entranced, afraid to even move a muscle. Her heart pounded wildly against her ribcage, threatening to burst.

This had not been the first time she had done this. Testing her luck, she had many times sneaked into the prince's chamber. And every night, she would sit at the dark corner of his bed, staring at the prince and in her mind, creating fantasies between her and him.

She continued to watch frozen in place as his mouth parted to take in air. She had never seen such perfectly shaped lips, the same lips that could mock and ridicule her so easily. The same lips which she had desired but knew she would never taste.

Her fingers itched to run through his ebony black hair which was as smooth as a baby's. His soft black hair fell attractively over his piercing blue eyes which were now closed. He looked like a little child when he was asleep but  behind that beautiful placid face laid a brilliant and dangerous mind.

A feeling of longing overwhelmed her, making her feel hot and dizzy. Beads of sweat began to form at her brow, waking her from her stupor. She rose silently from the kneeling position she was in.

For the first time, she shifted her gaze from him to the window and saw the first rays of the sun emerging from the mountains beyond. Hearing the faint sounds of footsteps getting nearer, she quickly slipped to the balcony.

"Farewell, my prince," she whispered softly.

With incredible stealth, she leaped off the balcony and spread her arms like a bird. For a brief moment , she felt the roaring wind brushing against her hair and face as she rushed down to meet the earth.

She landed low in a squatting position in a puddle of mud. She winced as she saw her boots were caked with mud and specks of it managed to splatter on her clothes and face.

Groaning inwardly, she moved swiftly to the stone wall which separated the guard quarters and the castle. The sun's light which reflected off the hilt of her sword casted a bright light on her face, causing her to trip over a small rock.

She slammed against the earth again and her teeth bit into her lower lip which caused a small bruise to from. Cursing her clumsiness, she quickly rose to her feet and took off again. Using both hands, she swung herself over the wall and got into the soldier's quarters.

As she walked along the dark hallways, she slowed down and regained her composure. She winced at the squishing sounds that her muddy boots made which seem to echo all around the big corridor.

After what seemed like an eternity, she reached her room. She twisted the cold brass handle of the wooden door and slowly entered her room.
