JD took the grocery list out of his pocket.
'"Moo Juice, check. Eggs, check. Spam." he glanced at his cart. "No spam." He drove the squeaky cart down isle 12 and found some cans of meat-flavored Jello (spam) on the shelf. He picked up 2 cans and put it in the cart. He drove the cart down the isle torward the checkout lanes when he spotted him. The Janitor. He froze like a deer in headlights, and thinking of that term was reminded of Carla's old nickname for him- Bambi. He decided that he should act like he didn't see him and just keep walking down the isle. He kept his eyes on the ground and continued walking down the isle.
"Hey," the Janitor said, not as a greeting, but just as a remark to make sure JD knew he noticed him.
JD was startled, and ran the squeaky cart into the shelves to his right; some cereal boxes fell down. JD looked up.
"Heyyy," he said trying to recover.
The Janitor looked from JD to the boxes, and back JD. "Are you going to pick those up?"
It was pretty sad that he was as afraid of The Janitor as he was of Doctor Kelso, but it was the truth. He quickly knelt down and placed them back on the shelf.
"I didn't know you worked here too."
CRAP. That was the wrong thing to say. JD realized this as soon as he had said it.
"Excuse me?"
"I-I just meant that- um- that- I just-meant.."
"Just because I happen to be a Janitor, and happen to be in a grocery store and see a rude person knock down something and they don't have the decency to pick it up, and I ask them to pick it up to save the employees the time to pick it up when the rude person could have, that automatically means that I must be one of the employees?"
JD would have answered, but that whole speech didn't make sense to him.
"Look, ive got to get this food back to my roommate for dinner, will you let me leave?" JD said annoyed.
He thought about what he had just said, and was impressed by his bravery.
"I'm sorry im keeping you from your busy life," The Janitor said. It sounded sincere.
JD was once again impressed. He had made a difference. Now the Janitor knew that he wasn't scared of him- even though he was.
JD started walking down the isle when The Janitor said, "I guess you don't want to spend time talking to a lowly janitor."
JD stopped. He felt guilty. It was a rude thing to say, acting like The Janitor didn't have any importance at all.
He turned around. "Im sorry!" JD said softly.
The Janitor mumbled, "Yea right."
"I really am!"
"Really?"
"Really, really."
"I'm sorry too!"
"I forgive you!"
"ME TOO!!"
JD thought about what just happened. Maybe it was a new beginning. Maybe things would be different from now on. Instead of the usual sarcastic remark, maybe it would be replaced with a compliment, or just a greeting. Whatever it was, it would be much better than the relationship now.
JD could see it, walking into the hospital one sunny morning, and seeing the Janitor. His instinct would be to duck into any room he happened to be walking by, but then he would remember, they were friends now!! So he would keep walking, tall and proud, and pass the Janitor and go, "Good Morning Janitor! How are you doing this beautiful morning?"
"Im doing great!! The night crew cleaned the toilets for me!! God JD, your looking great!! Have you been working out?" The Janitor would reply.
JD shook his head and came back to reality. "So, how has your day been?"
The Janitor looked at him in disbelief. "Yea, like I'd like to spend my off work hours talking to a lowly doctor. In your dreams." The Janitor walked down the isle the opposite way, and JD watched him, wondering what had just happened.
