"Hullo! Hullo, Ma - hey, everybody; dis is Benny."
"What the hell, Ang? We been waitin' dinner fa you."
"Well ya see there was traffic an' stuff, an- "
"Ah, no shit, c'mon, le's eat."
They bowed their heads. The Father prayed for blessing and they ate.
"Where you from, Benny?"
"Well, originally from Boston, but I live in Long Island." Shovelled
carrots in his mouth.
"Hey! We been there, right Uncle Dom?"
He laughed. "Right, Lou."
"No shit, assface."
"What'sa mattah with you?"
"Pass the potatoes, Ma."
Benny looked up and saw her.
When the moon hits your eye.... "Thanks." She accidentally touched his foot under the table. "I'm sorry." Upon noticing him, she blushed.
Like a big pizza pie.... His eyes ran over her black v-neck and brown hair that was parted to the side. She stared into her plate, aware of where he was looking. Her chest rose and fell with each breath she took. Slowly, he tore himself away and ate some steak. He knew he had to eat; it would be impolite not to. All he really wanted to do was stare at the woman all night. There was some more small talk, and then the Father rested his elbows on the table, focusing. "How long you in town, Benny?" Clink, clink. He swallowed. "'Bout two an-a-half weeks, Sir." His innocent expression appealed to her - but he called her father "Sir." She telepathically pleaded with him not to think about her father that way. Her father looked from Uncle Dom to Benny. "Then you can stop by on Saturday...we're havin' a little family get- togethah." He picked up his fork. Benny chewed. "Well, thank you, I'll be there." She had to close her eyes when her heart jumped. She wanted to stare at him, but she couldn't; he was already staring at her. And so it went. Benny and the girl very rarely exchanged glances because they were so careful not to let the other know where they looked.
That's amore.... Dinner was over. Angelo slapped Benny's shoulder. "We bettah go." He rose and pushed his chair in. "Pass me the soda, Ang." "Get it yaself." "Fuckin' bastard." "'Ey!" Paulie was slapped. "Ma! Get off!" "Paulie." The Father rested his elbow on the table again. He pointed. "Watch your mouth." In the silence that followed Benny got up. Walking slowly backwards, he joined Angelo in the foyer. She was staring back. "What's with you?" Angelo pulled his coat on. "What? Oh, nothin'." He took his jacket off the hanger. "Yeah, nothin', I saw you starin' at her." Angelo smirked. "Who woulda thought; I bring him home and he's after my sister." "'Ey, wanna keep it down? They're still in there." He wanted to crane his neck and have another glance. "So why don't you say something? Ya not gonna score just by starin'." He stood still. "I'm serious, don' be like that, ya moron. I ain't tryin' ta score." He pulled the jacket over his shoulders and adjusted it. Angelo stared. "Arright, relax, relax." He sighed. "God, she's pretty." She sighed. 'He's leaving.'
