Prologue

FBI Director Robert Martin silently looked at the distinguished man sitting across from him and cursed inwardly. Martin ran his hands through his graying hair as he contemplated the unusual, highly suspect request the man had just made to him. As the Director of the FBI, he had the power to grant such requests with hardly a qualm, but Martin was curious about this particular favor.

"You want me to separate a team from you own Agency? To sabotage their partnership?" Martin asked. "That's exactly what I want from you." The man replied calmly.

"I know it's none of my business" said Director Martin, "But just out of curiosity, why?"

As he waited for his answer, Director Martin stared at the man across from him. Martin had always loathed this man, from his days as a deputy director until now. He'd never had to ask for a favor from him. Until now, that is. Director Martin needed something covered up, but the price this man wanted from his favors sometimes surprised Martin. His former boss warned him when Director Martin had accepted this position that this man was ruthless, but Martin had no choice. This man alone could get him his favor. As Director Martin contemplated all of this, the man turned a glacial stare onto him.

"Director Martin, your favor doesn't come with a line of questioning." The man said rudely.

"I know it doesn't!" Martin snapped, "I just wanted to know."

"Let's just say this partnership is due for a separation." The man replied nastily as he stood. "I trust this won't be a problem?"

"No, it shouldn't be, if that's what you want." Director Martin said.

"It is." The man sneered as he left.

Director Martin sighed as he sat down at his desk with the folders of the two agents in front of him. He opened them and immediately dropped them in front of him as if the had burned him. Was his visitor serious? This was the team he wanted to split up? The man had to be crazy, the Director thought.

Director Martin had met the sandy haired male agent once. Only once. That meeting had been enough for Martin. The hazel-eyed agent's wrath was one that Director Martin didn't want to incur. Especially where this beautiful woman he was partnered with was concerned, Martin thought. Her photo was of a woman with shoulder length brown hair and sparkling brown eyes. Director Martin shook his head and sighed again. Break up the legendary Scarecrow and Mrs. King! Director Martin prayed silently that neither of them ever found out about this. Especially Scarecrow, he thought as he began to plan their split.
