She sat at her desk, plainly staring out into nothing. She didn't understand why everything had to happen the way it had been for days. She didn't want to live by rules; she thought rules made her pain less. She thought that if only she didn't go by the world that pain would reduce. It was in '81 that she decided that for good when she lost her father, and until Terry died by her own hand did she realize there was no way to escape pain. It was waiting for her, wanting to strike at the ones that weren't taken. She cried. But she always quickly wiped her tears, and tried to forget.
She decided the best person to call was Kurtis. Kurtis would be able to fill her spirits; after all they were such good friends after their little dilemma throughout Europe. Ring. Ring.
"Hello?" That American accent sounded predictably soothing.
"Hello Kurtis, It's Lara." She said, not realizing her own voice was soothing. For other reasons.
"I'd know that little British accent from anywhere, Lara. How've you been?" He seemed the perfect person to make Lara feel better because she already did.
"I've been, well, I don't know how to explain just this way. Do you wanna get a bite to eat, perhaps? I've been looking for someone who could make me feel better, and Hilary and Bryce are on the little vacation I let them go. I wanted to stay home alone and think. But I just realized alone isn't that good for me."
"Well there's a little problem, Lara." Kurtis replied.
"That can't be fixed?" Lara joked.
"Depends."
"On.."
"If the plane ticket it worth it, I'm kinda low on money. And I'm also on a different continent." Lara laughed, and was surprised she stayed smiling.
"Well, I'll let you be the judge of that when you get here." Lara teased.
"You know you always do that.. Put me in positions I might not approve of," Kurts said.
"And the Louvre?" Lara joked. She hoped Kurtis wouldn't mistake her for flirting, which was the last thing she needed right now.
"The Louvre?" Kurtis asked, pretending not to understand.
"Talk about putting people in positions they might not approve of," Lara said.
"Hey, I wasn't the one paying so little attention," Kurtis said.
"In my eyes, it looked like you were paying to much attention. Found two things you wanted to get," Lara giggled. Then regretting going that far.
"Do you always have to be right?" Kurtis asked.
"Well I don't have to be, I just am. I just signed offline, you have a plane booked in New York City in about 45 minutes, and that should be enough to get there and pack. Ta."
"How did you know I was in New York? This is a cell phone!" Kurtis asked, amazed.
"Don't underestimate me. I'll be waiting when you get here. It should be 10 to 12 hours." Click. Lara felt better that someone who enjoyed her company was coming to help. She missed Kurtis and was eager to speak with him. I need my spirits lifted somehow. I hope this makes me feel better. I just don't want this to lead the wrong way.
