Disclaimer: I wish I owned these characters, but I don't, Joss Whedon does. The only thing I own is the story.
A/N: Please review. I want to know what you think. Your comments are appreciated. This was my second story. It has been revised.
Buffy sat in her Chemistry class bored out of her mind. Her teacher was talking about how elements bond to each other. "When are we going to use this in life anyway?" she thought as she tapped the desk with her nails. As her teacher continued to drone on the bonding process, Buffy's mind wandered off.
She thought of the patrolling she would have to do later. It was a drag, but she hoped she could at least run into Angel. There was someone she wouldn't mind bonding with. He was such a handsome man, er, vampire...Maybe if patrolling was slow, she could convince him to hang out outside a cemetery...Perhaps, they could go to the Bronze which is where she'd rather hang out.
"Buffy," the teacher's annoyed voice cut through Buffy's daydreams like a sharp knife.
"Uh, yeah, what's wrong?" Buffy said trying not to sound confused, as she sat up in her seat and tried to look alert.
"Can you tell me what element this is?" The teacher pointed to the board where the letters 'CA' were written.
Buffy stared at the board. "It's um, um," Buffy began.
"It's what element?" the teacher said impatiently.
"Well, it's—" The bell rang signaling the end of the day.
"Time to go," Buffy finished hastily.
"Well class I'll see you tomorrow. And, Buffy, I hope you'll be prepared next time to answer my questions," the teacher said, surveying the teen with a warning stare.
"Yeah, I'll be ready." Buffy gave her teacher a fake smile and grabbed her bag and left.
"Hey, Buffy," her best friend greeted her, as she made her way through the hallway.
"Hey Will, how's it going?" Buffy smiled.
"Good, computer class was fun." Willow smiled.
"Well, least you had fun. My class was sooo boring," Buffy said.
"Oh, well you won't get bored tonight," Willow said, her eyes twinkling with a knowing gleam.
"Why's that?" Buffy asked unsure what her friend was talking about.
"Well, Giles said that he had some special training for you tonight besides the usual slaying," Willow whispered so that nobody else could hear.
"Great. More boring things to do. I wanted to hang out at the Bronze, but no my destiny has to come first," Buffy said with a sigh.
"Ooh, there goes Xander." Willow smiled as Xander approached them.
"Hey,how are you guys?" He grinned.
"Fine," they replied.
"Well, you guys wanna go to the Bronze tonight?" asked Xander eagerly.
"Got slaying." Buffy gave him an apologetic smile.
"Ah okay, how about you Will?" he asked.
"Gotta study for a test, but tomorrow is a good day. It's Friday so, um, I'm sure Giles will cut Buffy some slack and let her hang out," Willow said, trying to brighten up the conversation.
"Okay, tomorrow it is." Xander smiled.
"Yeah," Buffy said, hoping that there indeed would no slaying.
"So, Giles, what's the training I gotta do today?" Buffy asked her Watcher from her chair at one of the desks in Sunnydale's library.
"Er," the Watcher responded uncertainly as he finished shelving off the last book from the stack that had been sitting on a nearby table.
"What's wrong with you today?" Buffy asked noticing that her Watcher seemed distracted somehow. "Normally you'd be blabbering on about the training for tonight even while you're working."
He stared at her for a moment. "Yes...I suppose...I'm being rather slow on the forthcoming of the details concerning your training. Forgive me, Buffy, it's just I've had a lot of mind as of late..."
"When isn't there?" Buffy teased. "Is something the matter, Giles? Is something bad happening?" the Slayer wondered, looking concerned.
"Not exactly. I..."He took off his glasses and began to clean them. "It's my son..."
"Your son?" Buffy asked surprised.
Buffy stared at her Watcher.
Giles had a son?
The notion seemed absurd. Buffy could not imagine Giles socializing outside a library or hanging outside a cemetery. It was bizarre that the bookish, serious man before her had actually managed to socialize with a woman and had produced a child. Was he married? She had figured he wasn't, though he never actually said anything about his personal life.
It was weird to think of her Watcher having a life outside his duties to her. This unexpected announcement almost made it seem like the end of the world was happening, or at the very least, that the Giles before her had been switched by some kind of strange demon.
She couldn't help the small laugh that erupted from her.
"What's so funny?" Giles said, gazing at her confused.
"Sorry, but you have a son? I was expecting something much more...end of worldly to get you so worked up," Buffy explained.
Giles merely took off his glasses and wiped them. "Yes, well, I do have other concerns than upcoming apocalypses."
"Coulda have fooled me," Buffy grinned. "So, what's wrong with your son? How come you've never said anything?"
"Nothing's wrong with him, it's just he's coming here to Sunnydale. I should have told you about him the before, but we were busy with the Master and your training. I decided to tell you at a time I thought would be appropriate, but the occasion never seemed to arise. Now that my son is coming well it is obvious that I should tell you," Giles explained.
"Okay, but why isn't he here? I mean, shouldn't he have been here since last year?"
"He needed to stay in London to finish his studies. Since the Council notified me that now I had a Slayer, I had to leave him. You see he too is, uh, also a Watcher," Giles wiped his glasses yet again.
Buffy stared at her Watcher in disbelief. "Wh-what? Your son is also a W-Watcher?" Buffy asked amazed.
"Yes, he is," Giles said.
"Does this run in the family or what?" Buffy gave a small smile.
"Actually, it does," Giles answered.
"It does? I was just joking," Buffy said, even more surprised.
"Well, you see Slayers are Chosen. Watchers have been in certain families for generations. It is our destiny, just like Slaying is your destiny. Well my family the Giles' have been Watchers for a long time since the Council was formed, so my son is also a Watcher because of that," Giles explained.
"So, he cannot not be a Watcher?" Buffy asked..
"I'm afraid not. It's the same way you can't stop being a Slayer," Giles answered..
"Doesn't that just suck? You always wanted to be a Watcher, Giles?" Buffy asked curiously.
"Actually no," Giles said a bit embarrassed.
"That's a surprise. What did you want to be?" she asked.
"Something other than a Watcher," Giles said simply.
"I'd like that too."
"Your destiny is greater than mine," Giles reminded her.
"So, I don't want to have destiny. I'd rather be your average, confused teenager about their future. Anyway, why is your son coming?" Buffy asked.
"Well, you see he's always been a bit of a troublemaker to put it mildly. Recently the Council decided to send him here because they thought he would be better off here. It serves him as experience for if he does gain a Slayer of his own someday," Giles explained.
"Uh, okay. So now the gang and I are going to be stuck with two Watchers," Buffy said with mock terror.
"Well, yes," Giles said.
"When is he coming?" Buffy asked.
"Tomorrow," Giles announced.
