Simple Experimentation

"Those Formative Years" (Part one of five)

This is Egon's story, short and to the point. He's about sixteen here, folks.

-------------------------

No one ever entered Egon Spengler's private home lab next to his bedroom without knocking. No one. Not even the force of nature known as "Mom" was allowed in when he was busy with his theories and hypotheses.

On one particular Thursday night that was frigid even by Cleveland standards, he was completely uninterrupted as he conducted his latest experiment. Upon the completion of the task, he examined his results.

A bit more severe than anticipated, but overall not bad.

Fascinating.

-------------------------

"Spookums?"

"Yes?"

Eileen Spengler stared at her only child. "What…what did you do to your hair?"

Egon ran his hands through his newly-ebon hair, a slightly pleased expression on his face. "I merely adjusted my follicle pigmentation using a simple store-bought chemical compound."

A home dye job. "Is…is it permanent?"

"Actually, there is no such thing as a truly "permanent" hair dye. It simply is a matter of how long it takes for the colour to fade. If you're inquiring as to whether I purchased the maximum strength available, then yes, I did."

Eileen did not get shocked often as a rule, but this was definitely enough to manage it. "But…but your hair is…I mean…it was such a lovely blonde…why did…I just…." Words finally failed her.

He sighed. "Mom, it is merely an experiment. There is no reason for you to become distraught."

She nodded, then reached up and touched the hair. Black. Why black? Her son, the impulsive teenager. She then gathered him into a hug and he sighed again.

"I suppose now you'll want a pair of contact lenses. Or perhaps an earring?"

His derisive snort was quickly followed by "Nonsense. As I stated, it is a simple experiment. Nothing more. It is certainly not indicative of any deeper changes."

She looked up at her Spookums. Once the shock wore off, it actually didn't look bad. It made him a little pale, sure, but it wasn't bad at all. "Your father is going to have a fit."

Egon just smiled.
