The scuba diver went straight down out of the rented boat a mere mile from the world-famous pier. He had been assured this was the location of what he sought. It was unusually deep at this point. The weights carried him quickly down to the inky bottom, the only light source being his flashlight. In daylight it would have been a little brighter, but the killings were occurring at night and sundown was when he went searching.

He had been told of sea monster attacks on divers, small boats and even on some late night beach partyers. All the following newspaper accounts verified the killings but not their sheer gruesomeness. The throats of over a dozen adults were ripped out as if by tigers, and the bodies were drained of blood. Except for the infant on board a small yacht with her parents. She had been eaten entirely.

The diver saw the cave entrance when he got to the sea bottom and he turned off his light. For a while, he would go only by touch. He knew what to expect when he got to the inner chamber but he was still surprised when he turned on his light again. It was huge. A giant merman, like the god Dagon. But the almost human upperbody had a distinctly demonic face. The big fishtail waved slightly as he snored.

The scuba diver looked around for the minions because this leviathan was not what had attacked the people. But there were no minions in sight, and no side chambers in which they could be lurking. So the scuba diver made his preparations and waited, with the bright light shining right into the closed eyes of the giant. He wondered briefly if the merman had traveled here from the other side of the world or directly from some wet hell he had grown weary of.

Finally the colossus stirred and opened one slit eye, shut it quickly at the unexpected light and roared awake. A massive forearm blocked the light and a good view of the intruder, which gave that intruder time to bring his speargun to bear. He was near the entrance of the voluminous chamber when he fired but the leviathan was against the far wall. The spear had slowed considerably by the time it got to its target. Not that it would have had any effect at a faster speed, because the target was gone . . . in a way.

Where a colossal angry male demon had rested was now a swarm of she-demons, spreading out and slowly filling up the chamber. In the few seconds it took the spear to pass harmlessly between them, the diver expertly assessed that they were at least four dozen in number, each as big as he was, with attractive naked womanly upperbodies and long sea-snake tails for lowerbodies. Attractive except for rows of razor-sharp fish fangs in their mouths.

As he expected, the first attack from the 50 man-eaters was sonic. Their siren cries would have incapacitated him, had it not been for the earplugs he wore. He set off the dynamite charge he'd attached to the cave outer entrance and sealed them all in. While this had the lamias in a temporary shock, he turned off the light. In the pitch blackness, he took off the pressurized "air" tanks he carried and opened them full throttle. The highly poisonous gas rapidly dissolved into the seawater and the lamias all died screaming. He turned his light on again to the grisly sight of spasm-distorted bodies floating throughout the huge fresh tomb.

He knew it would take a while to dig his way back out of the sealed chamber, so he'd told Doyle and Cordy to not come back until the following night. The soul-cursed vampire immediately began his long non-breathtaking labor.
