Bright mahogany eyes met his azure gaze.
The boy blinked, and unconsciously, his small feet took him closer to the baby. She cooed and giggled, joyful gurgles that filled the air with its happy sounds. The sun shone brighter in response.
She beamed at him. Then, her tiny hands reached out to him.
His serious blue eyes widened, and he looked behind him. But he was the only one in the lobby of the tiny clinic. And her eyes, golden bronze pools with depth beyond her years, shone on him. Only for him.
Without realizing, his own fingers extended to touch her chubby ones, but hesitated. What if he broke her?
"Go ahead." An elegant lady in dark violet appeared from behind a shoji, wiping her hands on a cloth. She smiled, brown eyes sparkling. "She seems to like you."
"Really?" he asked, blue eyes sincerely shocked.
The woman looked at the four-year-old boy, surprised. "Why, yes."
He looked at the gurgling baby, and shyly offered her his finger. She grabbed his finger happily in her tiny fists, and smiled a wide grin that made him warm inside.
Slowly, entranced, he dropped from his stiff stance to his knees and then…
He smiled.
"Aoshi, it's time to go." An older man, a pouch of medicine in hand, gestured for them to go. With much reluctance, the boy loosened his finger from the baby's grip. He stood up, and addressed the baby politely.
"Goodbye…"
"Megumi," the woman inserted warmly, 'her name is Megumi. Next time Okina comes back, I hope you will come too and visit Megumi."
The older man paid his respects to the woman, and walked briskly out the entrance. The boy looked back once more, then obediently followed Okina.
"Megumi…" he whispered.
His mouth curved into a smile.

Hey peeps…no, I haven't given up on my Shrine of Ice and Fire fic, or "What Dreams May Come", but I had a mental block and needed to write something, anything. Plus, this is an exercise in brevity for me. I tend to write lengthy hefty sentences. Sometimes, I describe way too much. : D Anyway, this series of short scenes that I'm starting is tied into my not-yet-published fic "Intertwined Destinies". This fic is basically snapshots of the scenes from there.
Oh, and check my profile. I've listed the future fics I'm going to write (all of which have Aoshi/Megumi in them), and I need your input and help on a couple of them. Thanks! And review please!
