Speechless Chapter One

Izaak of Grassmount was a normal squire. He tried to finish all his work, learnt thing from his knight master, and got into the occasional fight. He did all the things you would expect a squire to do.

Almost all the pages and squires knew him, if not by name then by face. He was tall, with sandy blond hair that hung just below his ears, brown eyes and a sprinkling of freckles over his nose.

He was good-natured and easy going, always laughing and joking with his friends. He occasionally got into trouble but mostly he just did what he was told.

Most people expected Izaak to pass his ordeal. Sure, his family and friends were worried about him, but it was more nerves based on what the Chamber had done to others, not on any real expectation he would fail.

No one expected that three weeks after his ordeal he would die without speaking a word. But the Chamber of Ordeal does work in mysterious ways.

Authors Note: This very short chapter is more of an introduction then a first chapter. This story will probably have about four or five chapters, the next chapter will be Izaak's Ordeal, the third will be the three weeks he lived without talking (but that might end up as two chapters) and the last will be his death.

Disclaimer: The world and the original idea of a guy who failed his ordeal belong to Tamora Pierce. The characters are mine and my friend Beckie helped creak Izaak *smirk* (That probably explains why they are so . . . 'different' . . .)
