Title: Patterns
Author: Morbid Muse
Email: Amandab9@aol.com
Shipper: CJ/Toby
Rated: R for sexual situations
Timeline/Spoilers: No spoilers here... no real timeline either. This story fits in anywhere as long as they work at The White House, really.
Summary: "They'll make it to the bed this time."
Author's Note: I stopped watching the show once the character Sam left but it won't affect the story. Also, this is my first West Wing fic so be gentle.
----
They'd make it to the bed this time. It would be close and for a second she'd wonder if he would end up taking her on the floor again, like that one time before they had been elected into the White House. But back then they had been younger and considerably more drunk. Besides, CJ knows that being pounded into the floor by an aging Toby would leave both of them sore for tomorrow.
She'll be relived when they make it to the bed this time. Their lips and hands feverishly roaming around the other's body, never landing on one spot and CJ will almost forget to breathe, let alone where her bed is.
It'll be hard and it'll be good, just like always. Then it'll be over and there will be the typical not-quite-awkward moment. Neither of them will say a word.
CJ will count the minutes on her clock, the digit one by her bed, that it takes before Toby starts to redress only if he doesn't beat the red numbers to it. He will mutter his apologies for why he can't stay as she watches him gather his clothes. They'll avoid having to face that awkward morning but not the awkward end to the night.
If she's mad at him, either from the work day or something else, she'll just tune him out and wordlessly stare at him. If she's really mad at him she won't even give him that. But this time will be like most times, so she'll listen and watch as he prepares to leave her again.
He'll turn to her and promise to see her again, and if she is feeling bitter she might respond that he doesn't have a choice since they work together, but no matter her emotion she'll always feel her heartbreak just a little.
Then he'll give her a quick kiss, probably on the forehead, and leave into the early morning.
He won't say that he'll call her since they would both know it to be a lie. He won't say he'll miss her and she'll be glad because she wouldn't be able to stand it if that were a lie too.
She'll wonder if their patterns are worth it, they've both always known that the way they relive their past has kept them forever in a holding pattern. But she won't ask it out loud since he might actually answer.
