"So, what'd your brother say?"

"Good-bye."

"So Chino was, uh..."

"It's good to be home."

____________

Good-bye seems so final and you know when Marissa rests her head on Ryan's shoulder that you never want to hear it. Not from Ryan. And you fear that it's coming. It's not so much a separation in distance but you see it in his eyes.

His demons and fears radiate there. Things you can never understand because you weren't there. You haven't seen the things he's seen or done what he's done.

Jealousy is not an easy thing to own up to, but you admit it. You soak in it.

Marissa at least knows now what his home was like; where he came from, but not you. You won't know and he won't tell you.

Then he looks at you. At you. And you know that it doesn't matter where he came from. None of it matters. Good-bye will not be coming soon.

You remind yourself you're not his brother.

That this is his home.

That you are his home.

Words like Good-bye and Home are such simple words. Such insignificant things people toss around like a football on Sundays, but you doesn't use them lightly. Because Good-bye comes too often where you're from and Home is not something you've had very much of in your life.

In fact, sometimes you wonder if you ever really had a Home until the Cohens took you in. There were houses and apartments and motel suites and sometimes, when the rent was late and your mom was feeling particularly mean, the street, but you never really felt at home in any of those places.

They say that 'home is where the heart is', a few months ago you would have balked and called it a crock of shit, but now you understand. Now you get it.

Because Seth is your home. Wherever he is, is where you feel safe. And you don't ever want to say good-bye to that.

It's good to be home.
