This is set in the present. Carol Hathaway is still at the ER. She and Doug
have been married for 5 years. She has Tess and Kate, her twin girls who
are 6 years old. Abby is a doctor because she finished Med school.
It was a normal day at Cook County General Hospital. Carol and Abby were enjoying a cup of coffee in the lounge.
"So, what are your plans for the day?" Abby asked Carol.
"Ah the fun jobs of changing bed pans and holding hair back while kids puke. It's the many joys of nursing. But then again, you would know, wouldn't you Dr. Lockhart? You were once in these shoes, were you not?" Carol asked playfully.
"Oh yes. Many a day was I in your shoes." Abby said and smiled just as Haleh poked her head in.
"Dr. Lockhart, trauma rolling in, auto verses pedestrian. It doesn't look good." Haleh said.
"Be right there," Abby said. " So Carol, you still up for dinner with Susan and me?" Abby asked while walking out.
"You bet!" Carol said as she followed Abby out. Carol went to the admin desk and sat with Randi and talked for a while. The two of them were so busy talking, neither one of them noticed a red haired girl standing patiently at the admin desk.
"May I help you?" Randi asked the young girl as she saw Carol go to Exam 1 to check a patient.
"Well, I am looking for Carol, Carol Hathaway." The girl said in a heavy Russian accent.
"She just went down to check on a patient. If you'll sit right there in chairs, I'll have her find you when she comes back." Randi said.
"Thank you." The girl replied and went to sit down in the waiting area.
Just then, Carol came walking back to the admin desk. " So where were we?" Carol asked.
"Carol, before we continue our conversation, there is someone in chairs who asked for you. That red headed girl over there." Randi said and pointed to the girl.
"Thanks Randi I'll be right back." Carol said and went over to the girl. "Hi, may I help you?" Carol asked, looking into the red head's eyes which looked vaguely familiar.
"Yes, I met you a long time ago. About 10 years ago. I came in here and you helped me a lot. My name is Tatiana." The girl said.
"Tatiana," Carol said the name out loud, trying to process who she was. Then it hit her, she came into the ER when she was a lot younger and her adoptive mother abandoned her. She had.wait a minute, she was diagnosed with AIDS. This can't be her.
" Carol, are you alright?" Tatiana asked smiling.
" Tatiana, what did you have when you came into the hospital?" Carol asked cautiously.
" I had and still have AIDS. But I have been very healthy since then. The doctors called it a miraculous recovery. I've been staying with a nice couple but not nearly as nice as you were to me, Carol."
"Tatiana, I just can't believe it's you. I thought I'd never see you again. I thought when they told me I couldn't adopt you that I would never be able to see you. But you're here. I can't believe it." Carol said, tears forming in her eyes as she hugged Tatiana.
" I am so happy I came back, and I learned English. I've been speaking fluently for 6 years now. Oh Carol, we must spend time together. Please?" Tatiana pled.
" Of course we'll spend time together." Carol said and hugged Tatiana again.
