'Battle of the Shirefolk'
By: Brett Light
Many and many a year ago
Near the end of the longest war
There was a battle not known by many
Not even scholars of forgotten lore.
But there was indeed a battle
Unlike any other battle
For this new unnerving prattle
Was the sound of war upon the Shire.
The situation must be dire
For the little Hobbits of the Shire
To take to arms with angry fire
And fight on and on through muck and mire.
But the hobbits had to fight, you see
Foul men took their land, and burned their trees!
So for their glory, and possibly tea
They marched to war in two's and three's.
But this battle only came to be
When two great hobbits came to lead
Clad in mail atop their steeds
These two friends had done great deeds.
There rode fair young Brandybuck
And at his side, his good friend Took.
These friends had done great things, you see
Deeds of which we can only dream!
And even though hobbits love only to cook
They expected mischief from the Took.
In this fiendish plan of many thrills
He'd lure the men over the hill
Where he'd set his ambush, fit to kill
Fighting until all was stilled.
And so he made those men stand still,
As Took was chased over the hill,
Where they met the ambush, fit to kill
For this clever plan had fit the bill.
Arrows would fly and swords would bite
Til all men died or dashed from sight.
And so it came to be that way
The Shire was won.in just a day.
Many hobbits fell that day,
But it had to be that way.
For even though they no longer shook
Whenever their spirits take a look
They see the shire saved
By a clever Took.
