Merry grabbed the letter and began to read.

I don't know how to say this so I might as well just say it.

I may go down in history as the fool of a Took that messed everything up, and I worry that you might become embarressed. I just wanted to tell you that I'm your fool. I always have been. I need you like I need air and ale.
I am going into battle today. I might not come back. I'm going to be waiting for you on the other side. When it is your time, I will come bring you home. We'll be happy forever.
I'm sorry I waited too long to tell you how I feel, but I was afraid that you might not love me back. The other day I acccidentally broke a mirror that was in the room I'm staying in. I looked at the shards of glass on the floor. They looked just like my heart if you were to leave me.
