To Covet
Faith slumped in the seat, looking absent, the way she did during one of his long lectures back in Sunnydale. The ill fitting prison garb added to the impression of disaffected youth. The phone in her hand was the only indication that she wanted to be in this conversation. Her eyelids were a little lowered when she turned her eyes to him.
"You know why you didn't try," Faith made the statement with a hint of accusation in her gravelly voice.
She leaned back significantly, letting the pause linger between them. While he waited for her to enlighten him, Wesley noticed that the partition was covered with fine scratched so that she was a little fuzzy behind it.
"You just wanted me out of the way," she said as if it were obvious and only natural and she didn't blame him a bit. Her words were even joined by a shrug, like she didn't care in the least.
It had taken him months to take up the small shred of duty regarding her. It was a miracle that anything of it remained after what she had done. Wesley had been trying to give Faith a little credit, or lift some of the blame. It was true that she had been very young and he hadn't been there for her. Having deigned to try and make her feel better, lighten some of her burden, he didn't expect a new accusation. But maybe he should have. It was the real reason why he had never truly tried to reach her. When the time came he had just consigned her to the Council. Because she was unmanageable. She was jagged and unreachable. She was a piece of badly broken glass.
He felt sure that wasn't how she saw it. Then she explained herself.
"But she already had a Watcher. She didn't need you."
