Joey Potter needed a new home. Butterfly Pond sounded good to her.
After running away from Capeside Massachusetts more actually from Michael. Her best friends Pacey and Jen didn't know about him. Joey and Michael had been secretly dating for 9 months. He abused her at least once a week.
Joey decided to move away from him but she couldn't tell Pacey or Jen because Michael would force it out of them. They didn't even know who Mike was. After she left they would know though.
So there she was in Butterfly Pond, thinking she was maybe pregnant. Joey didn't want her baby to live a life with a terrible man, if she was pregnant.
She left a note for Bessie. It said:
Dear Bess,
I have decided to leave Capeside. I have to get away from someone. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. I didn't tell anyone I was leaving so don't interrogate everyone. I'll miss you and love you
Love, Joey
She also left a note for Pacey:
Pacey,
I am leaving Capeside but don't worry about me. I will miss you dearly. You will find out about things I haven't told you, please forgive me for not telling you. I was scared.
I love you with all my heart ,
Joey
P.S. That's for the money.
Joey found okay housing and a job before she was in Butterfly Pond a week.
She was working as a secretary at a bank's office.
She was living in a house owned by an elderly woman. She rented a small room on the top floor. Although it was small, it had a bathroom. The bedroom had a bed, dresser and desk.
Butterfly Pond was a very tiny town, close to Albuquerque New Mexico, and the townspeople were friendly and didn't ask too many questions on why she suddenly appeared.
The night before she left Capeside, she asked Pacey for some money. Pacey gave her 2 hundred dollars and she promised to pay him back.
He asked a couple of questions but she didn't answer them. So he left it alone. Pacey thought that she needed the money for the Ice House and he didn't what to down her pride.
