Title: Essence of Light

Author: Third Rabbit

Setting: Ever since Riku escaped the darkness, the essence of a little girl continues to stalk him, haunting him with memories from when he was within Kingdom Hearts. When he begins to slowly drift back to the darkness, this little girl will show him the light.

Author's notes: I don't own KH characters. Square Enix and Disney does. But, I do own the lil girl.

This is a story that I typed up a while back. I'm still in to and trying to update Connecting to Oblivion, but this is just a small story. I think I'll make it a five chapter story. Review if you want to.

Riku sat on the limb of the Paopu Tree, his silky silver hair brushing against the tan cheeks. The islands were quiet now, not much play going on since the heartless incident. Mere months passed since that fateful day came. Since he turned to darkness. Now days, Riku was sometimes afraid to step out of the light, mainly for what he went through when he was in Kingdom Hearts.

"Riku, you've got to do something." Selphie or Kairi would say, but he wouldn't listen.

As far as Riku was concern, he didn't really exist or rather, part of him was gone. The part of him that everyone knew. Sora could forgive him a million times yet, Riku would never forgive himself for the pain that he caused for Sora and himself. Pushing a strand of his flickering silver hair aside, Riku's aquamarine eyes continued to stare passed the sea and towards the emptiness.

"Maybe you really can't escape the darkness..." Riku muttered to himself, softly.

Jumping down from the tree, Riku stretched his arms out and yawned. The solitude around was getting to the point where he couldn't take it anymore. Looking around, he only sighed as he began to walk away from the tree, when he heard it. What was it? Riku listened and again, heard it. It was soft and caring. It was a giggle. Someone was giggling. Turning around, Riku's eyes showed much surprised to see a little girl, sitting in the exact position he was in.

"Hey, who are you?" Riku asked, walking up to the tree.

The child turned around, revealing her cute, childish face. Her eyes were deep brown, causing Riku to drown in them. Her hair was a light peach pink color, like cotton candy. She appeared to be wearing a silky white dress and no shoes. The child jumped down from the tree and stared at Riku. A small glint of silver slipped down her cheek, causing Riku to feel something snap inside his heart.

"Why'd you give me up?" She whispered, softly. "We're supposed to be one."

"What are you talking about?" Riku asked, slightly frowning. "Who are you?"

"With the light in your heart, you won't make it, Riku." The child whispered, "Within every heart, there lies both darkness and light. But, if light doesn't exist in your heart, then the darkness will swallow you. Without your light, Riku, you will fall to the darkness once again."

Riku narrowed his eyes. "How do you know so much? Who are you? Answer me!"

The child sadly turned around, looking at Riku sideway. "I am...what you believe I am..."

"No, wait!!" Riku ran up, hand outstretched.

The child continued walking and then, she just disappeared. Riku stared for a moment, his eyes showing unquestionably worry in them. Looking at the ocean, he began to drift in to a trance, the small child's voice echoing in his mind.

"Without your light, Riku, you will fall to the darkness once again."
