"Grandpa?"
"Yes, Ian."
"Did you and Daddy spend time outside looking up at the stars when he was little?"
"Yes, we did."
"Cool."
Chuckling Jack Crichton hugged his grandson.
"Daddy said he wasn't much older then me when you pointed the moon out to him and told him that you would be going there. Did you want Daddy to be like you?"
Ian looked up at his grandfather. The night sky was dominated by the rising full moon. Even to Ian's experienced eye, the satellite was beautiful. He too, felt compelled to go there. That thought fueled his curiosity about his father's childhood. Ian felt that it would be wonderful to have such a moon to look at all the time.
"Yes, but I wanted him to be more. I want him to reach farther then I did. I wanted him to be what he wanted to be."
"That's funny."
"Why?"
"Mommy said that's what Daddy told her."
"Really?"
"Yeah, he told Mommy she could be more. That's why she left the Peacekeepers."
The silence stretched out, as they gazed up at the wonder before them.
"Grandpa?"
"Yes."
"Do you think I can be more?"
"Yes, I do." Jack looked down at his grandson. "You know Ian you can be anything you want if you want it enough."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Cool."
Ian buried deeper into his Grandfather's side.
"I'm glad, because I want to be like you and Daddy."
"An astronaut?"
"More then that."
"What then?"
"A man of honor."
Jack glanced down at his grandson.
"Is that how you see your father and me?" Jack was in awe at the depth of Ian's intellectual understanding. He had tried to live his life with honor. He taught it to his children. Those years of thinking that he had lost John, nearly killed him. He had so wanted to know the man that he knew that John would become. Now the product of that teaching was looking up at him; with love in his eyes.
"Yeah."
Choked with emotion Jack Crichton could only hug his grandson relishing the feel of the small boy in his arms. This was how John had felt when he was Ian's age. It was like he had a second chance at having a young son again.
"Grandpa?"
"Yes, Ian."
"You know you are my hero, don't you?" Ian looked up at his grandfather's face and saw tears.
"What's wrong, Grandpa?"
"Nothings wrong. I am just happy to have you here."
Turning, Ian reached up and touched a tear sliding down Jack's cheek. Jack couldn't control himself. His thoughts went to his wife. Honey I hope you can see this, feel this-know how proud I am of John and his life.
"Why are you crying?"
"Because I'm proud of you."
"Really?"
"Yeah. You know, Ian, I love you?"
"Do you love me because I am your grandson?"
"Yes, but also because of your decision to accept honor as something to strive for, just like your father."
"I love you to, Grandpa," Ian said as he reached up to put his arms around Jack's neck hugging him close.
