"If you ask me, I'll only lie"

"No, you won't"

"And how would you know?"

"Words mean nothing; I'll see the truth in your eyes"

And so he shut them; closed them so tight that it made his head ache, and swirls of colour and pink sparkles danced in the blackness behind his eyelids. Because he had to lie.

"And now how would you tell?"

"Open your eyes"

"No"

He couldn't see, so the sudden gentle caress of rough fingertips upon his cheek came as a slight shock and he trembled. The unexpected softness of hot breath ghosting across his lips startled him. He leaned forward to claim them but was denied his purchase. His eyes shot open.

"Never hide your eyes, they're too pretty"

"Pretty they may be, but they'll give me away"

"No they won't, because you wouldn't lie to me anyway"

"No, I wouldn't"

Draco thought he could do without this; this tender moment, this acknowledgement of feelings, this sensation that was gripping his heart and sending bile to his throat; this agony. Because he had to lie.

"So then, tell me"

"No"

"I think I already know anyway"

"Then why ask?"

"I want to hear you say it"

The hand that had been at his cheek sneaked a path upwards and wrapped itself around strands of fine blonde hair. The mouth that had so softly ghosted breath upon his pale lips was leaving its mark on his neck. Green eyes that had searched his own could no longer be seen; it didn't make it easier, because he had to lie.

"Harry…"

"Tell me the truth"

"Harry…"

"If you lie I'll know it"

"Harry…"

"And don't be scared"

"…I don't love you"

The hand was removed and he was cold; the lips stopped their play and he was so very cold. Green eyes bored deep into silver and searched and searched. A shadow of a smile flicked across chapped lips, but a frown dented a scar adorned forehead. Eyelids fluttered closed to stop the tears and silence choked them like gas. Draco held his breath; a sigh might give him away.

"I guess…I…"

"Harry…"

"It's easier this way really…"

"Harry…"

"There's no future in this"

"Har…no, no there isn't"

And his bed felt empty without the extra weight, and light footsteps across the dungeon floor were paralleled on his heart. And green eyes shining once in hope were burning imprints on his mind.

"Harry…"

"I…I never lied to you, you know"

"Harry…"

"Goodbye Draco"

The door closed almost silently

"…you said that you'd know"
