A Seer?

Dawn sighed, staring at the pages of the book, but not seeing them. She was still running her last conversation with Xander through her head.

`You're not special. You're extraordinary.`

Well, that was obvious. She was the Key, after all. Maybe that should've told her that something was wrong. How can a ball of energy be a Slayer? Still, that did mean that she wasn't normal. Yay?

`Maybe that's your power...`

`What?`

`Seeing, knowing.`

`Maybe it is.`

Where had that come from? Was it just that Xander had looked so… helpless?

But he isn't.

She jumped, knocking the book off the table. Had she just said that? It had felt like it was herself talking, but the voice hadn't sounded like her at all.

"Who isn't?" she asked out loud, not knowing whether she wanted the voice to answer or not.

The Seer.

She stared ahead, not knowing what she should do. Panic or stay calm? Tell Buffy or remain silent? Finally, she just picked up the book and flicked through the index.

'Succubi, Snakes, Slayers… Ah ha!' Taking note of the page, she flicked back through the pages to the one marked Seers. Leaning forward, she started reading out loud.

"Seers are spirits that inhabit normal human bodies. Often, unless the spirit is called forth, the human is unaware of what it truly is.

"Seers can see all times simultaneously. Although they are unable to say what the future is, they can still see it, and know of every time there ever was. A Seer can usually be found near a Slayer, and when the Slayer dies, it is they who name the next one, for their bindings fall away for that instant.

"Apart from this point, Seers remain hidden, unless called forth by the Key…"

There was more, but she stopped at that. The Key… that was her! So was that what the voice was? The part of her that was still the Key, not Dawn Summers? But then… who was the Seer?

The one who was there from the start. The one who blended in, and saw.

She gasped, "Xander!"

Lady Moon: I'm going to regret writing this, aren't I?

Digital Empress: Do I really have to answer that?

LM: I couldn't help it! Xander's speech in Potential kicked my muse bunnies into gear!

DE: Three things. 1) Your muse bunnies don't NEED kicking, 2) kicking bunnies is cruel, and 3) bunnies don't have gears.

LM: …Shut up.
