Prologue

"Harry - no!" Remus Lupin fell back to his knees, his eyes unseeing as Harry ran off after Bellatrix Lestrange. He didn't notice Neville tugging on his sleeve; the injured Order members staggering past, barely able to walk, or Dumbledore's worried glance as he ran out after Harry. He didn't hear the taunts of the immobilized death - eaters, the frantic shouts of the children in the adjourning rooms, or the haunting whispers of those trapped beyond the fluttering veil. All he knew was the cold pain filling his chest, which had begun the moment Sirius fell. It wasn't until Dumbledore came back with Fudge and the Aurors, that he was in any way aware of his situation.

"Here." Dumbledore told him softly, "Take this portkey back to headquarters and get some rest." Remus took the golden goblin's ear and he immediately found himself in the hallway of 12 Grimmauld Place.

Molly Weasley came out of the kitchen to see who it was, but Remus just stumbled up the stairs to the room he had shared with Sirius for the past year. Locking the door, Remus staggered over to the double bed in the corner of the room and collapsed on it sobbing, grateful in some small part of his mind for the extra strength silencing charms Sirius had placed on the room when they moved in.

Wearily, Molly rejoined her husband in the kitchen, where they began preparing for the return of those injured in this first battle of the second war.
