My Hero
A Stargate: SG-1 Story
By Teri

Summary: Jack remembers a fallen hero (Season 7 spoilers - Jack/Janet friendship).

Note: This was written before Heroes debuted and as it turns out the manner of Janet's death and Jack's involvement was slightly different than the spoilers I read. I did not alter this story to fit the episode, but the change is so slight it shouldn't matter to most readers. If it does, please consider this story AU.

Disclaimer: Janet Fraiser, Jack O'Neill, and everything else regarding Stargate belong to their creators, of which sadly I am not one. However, the original story is mine and I request that it not be archived without my permission.

"I know most of you are surprised to see me up here knowing how much I HATE making speeches, but this is one speech that needed to be made," Jack O'Neill stood at the podium in front of the Stargate.

"Dr. Janet Fraiser did the most noble thing a person can do. She gave her life for another living person. She also did one of the craziest things; she gave her life for me." He smiled slightly before staring off into nowhere and speaking more softly, "it wasn't an even trade Doc., not even by half."

He paused for a moment focusing again.

"She died coming to my aid. I've heard some say that she 'became a hero' that day, but the truth is she was already a hero."

"How many times has she prevented some unknown cotangent that had made its way on to this base from escaping? How many times had she saved your life?" He gestured to one side of the room.

"Or yours?" He gestured to the other side.

"Imagine where this command would be without her quick thinking and compassion?"

"Dr. Janet Fraiser is the unsung hero of the Stargate Command and therefore the entire plant; but, you see there is more to this story than that. Officially, the Doc. and I met during the 'cave man' incident after she was assigned as the Chief Medical Officer."

"Unofficially, meaning in reality, Janet and I met nearly two years before. It was just a few weeks after the first Stargate mission to Abydos. I had arrived at the Colorado Springs Court House early for my preliminary divorce hearing. In an incredible twist, she was already in the courtroom waiting to finalize her divorce. There was a delay and we got to talking. When her case was finished, I thought she had left, but she hadn't. She was waiting outside for me. She waited because she said I looked like I needed someone. I started to protest, but well you'all know it is hard to say no to the Doc."

The room filled with light laughter and someone even said, "you've got that right."

"She told me to look at her. I did and she told me that it wasn't charity or pity or whatever else I may think, but right now she needed to think of someone beside herself and I got elected. So we went and had lunch."

"We ended up having lunch every day that week. We never talked about work. We were just Janet and Jack, 'gay divorcees'. Eventually, I found out that she was Air Force stationed at the Academy Hospital and she was just as surprised that I was a recently re-retired Colonel."

"She would show up after work and drag me out of my house. She dragged me back into the land of the living. The first Stargate mission may have ended my death wish, but it was Janet who forced me to actually live again."

"So you see she has been my personal hero for a very long time, but more importantly she was my friend."

"Janet, you will be missed."

I hope that someone enjoyed this. I had written most of it a few months ago when the spoilers became well know, but I finally got it typed up.
